NFL Week 3 Betting Odds

Week three opens with a traditional rivalry that dates to 1960 and the founding of the American Football League. The New England Patriots and New York Jets have shared the same division since those humble beginnings. Speaking of history, the Patriots have made it for 2024 with Jerod Mayo taking over for Bill Belichick, who many believe is the GOAT of NFL coaching. Mayo is expected to be more collaborative and gentler than the Hoodie was, which usually means potential problems. The biggest problem remains at QB, where Jacoby Brisset is expected to be challenged by first-round draft pick Drake Maye. The Jets have new retro uniforms in their 1980s vintage and high hopes that they can win as long as Aaron Rodgers stays healthy—the Jets figure to have a better chance to contend this season than the Pats. The New England and New York will clash on Thursday Prime Video.

In the late Sunday afternoon window, the most appealing matchup is the Baltimore Ravens at the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas is known as “America’s Team” for a reason and continues to generate buzz from owner Jerry Jones’ hype machine. Head coach Mike McCarthy will be looking over his shoulder knowing that if he fails to deliver a Super Bowl, Bill Belichick is waiting in the wings.

NBC Sunday Night Football gets an odd interconference matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs visiting the Atlanta Falcons. At first glance, the Chiefs look like a heavy favorite, and the betting public is likely to confirm that reality. Atlanta has a new head coach, Raheem Morris, and a crowded QB room with Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix, Jr, the controversial first-round draft pick in April. The Chiefs can often be distracted and sloppy against lesser foes, so the threat of an upset will be in the air.

A Monday night doubleheader will put a bow on Week 3. ESPN will offer the Jacksonville Jaguars at Buffalo Bills, and then 45 minutes later, ABC will broadcast the Washington Commanders at Cincinnati Bengals.

After breaking through with a playoff win in 2022, the Jacksonville Jaguars took a step back last year. QB Trevor Lawrence was not nearly as effective, and the Jaguars' defense was not much of a help either. To be fair, Lawrence carried too much of the burden with poor support from the ground game. But Jacksonville remains a capable team that will not give the Bills a pass.

Washington will turn the page with a new era of its own. 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels is the probable starter and number one on the current depth chart. Marcus Mariota, who won the 2014 Heisman Trophy but has had a journeyman NFL career, is the backup.

Additionally, the Commanders have new leadership on the sidelines. Former Atlanta Falcons head coach and Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is the new HC, bringing credibility and optimism to the nation’s capital. Former Texas Tech and Arizona Cardinals HC Kliff Kingsbury is the offensive coordinator and is expected to help guide Daniels through his growing pains.

Cincinnati is focused on regaining its old playoff form with the return of QB Joe Burrow, who missed the stretch run of the 2023 season. Cincinnati was the 2021 AFC champion and will fight this year for a return to the Super Bowl.
