NFL Week 3 Spreads, Money Lines and Totals

With each loss stacked up at the start of the year, the likelihood of making the playoffs decreases. We once saw a team reach the postseason after starting the year 0-4. We’re only halfway to that point but several clubs are in desperate need of a victory as we enter Week 3 of the 2023 NFL season. Of the nine teams without a win through two weeks, some of them were expected to be there. The Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals all had serious concerns entering the season.

Others, however, were not viewed as 0-2 teams. The LA Chargers have scored the second-most points of any AFC team and the Cincinnati Bengals were favored to win their division. Losing their first two games is nothing new for the Bengals, who won 12 of their final 14 games last season and reached the AFC Championship game.

With a miraculous second half comeback to beat Arizona in Week 2, the New York Giants avoided a 0-2 start. It took them six quarters before finally scoring overcoming a 20-0 halftime deficit with 31 second half points. It was bittersweet, though, with news that Saquon Barkley would miss several weeks with an ankle injury. Barkley’s presence will be missed when the Giants open the betting week at San Francisco on Thursday Night Football. The Giants opened as 11-point underdogs against the unbeaten Niners.

Week 2 saw scoring increase with the OVER cashing in 13 of the 16 games. It was quite a change from Week 1 when 12 games played below the closing total. Also, 10 teams scored at least 30 points in a sign that offenses worked out the kinks following a down opening weekend.

Fans are also treated to second Monday Night Football doubleheader with the opening contest the only one on the Week 3 docket featuring unbeaten teams. The Eagles, one of three NFC East clubs at 2-0, head to Tampa for a date with the surprising Buccaneers, who are one three NFC South teams without a loss. The Eagles hit the board as a 5.5-point favorite.

The second game is a rematch of Super Bowl LVI when the Los Angeles Rams visit the Cincinnati Bengals. The Rams prevailed in February 2022, 23-20, on a last Matthew Stafford touchdown pass to MVP Cooper Kupp. The hope for the home team is that Joe Burrow is well enough to play after a calf injury that sidelined him for most of training camp resurfaced in the Week 2 loss to Baltimore. Still, the Bengals are a slight 1.5-point favorite to get their first win of the season.

It turned out to be a another good week for underdogs with teams catching points on the closing line winning six games outright while going 9-5-2 ATS. The lines weren’t too drastic, however, with Seattle at +4.5 the biggest Week 2 underdog winner. The biggest closing line in Week 2 saw Dallas cover the 8.5-point spread in their 30-10 win over the Jets. Three games on the Week 3 slate opened with double-digit spreads. The Niners are laying 11-points to the Giants, Dallas is favored by 12.5 over the Cardinals and Kansas City opened as a 13-point favorite over the Bears.
