Bet on 2019 NFL Week 3
With a couple of games already in the books for the 2019 NFL regular season, we start to get a clearer picture of how things will pan out. Nothing is set in stone, however, and there still is time for teams to make a push if the start of the year didn’t go to their liking. The opposite holds true as well. Teams that get off to a strong start better not get over confident.
The Jacksonville Jaguars reached the AFC Championship following the 2017 season and their expectations were bloated heading into last season. They opened with a pair of victories, including a beatdown of the New England Patriots in Week 2. However, they’d win just three of their last 14 games with the Blake Bortles era ending before it was over. The moral of the story is: don’t give up on your favorite team after only two weeks.
And speaking of the Jags, they’ll open Week 3 on Thursday night hosting Tennessee in a matchup of AFC South rivals. Both teams stumbled last season after reaching the playoffs in 2017. While the Jags made a switch at quarterback, bringing in former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles, the Titans elected to stick with Marcus Mariota even though his numbers have declined the past few seasons. A year of good health would certainly help the former Heisman Trophy winner and Tennessee’s chances of getting back to the postseason.
After all their offseason maneuvering the New York Jets will get an early opportunity to see how they match up against the league’s best when they head to Foxboro for the first of two meetings with the defending champion New England Patriots in the only other divisional matchup on the Week 3 schedule. One of the reasons Adam Gase got the Jets coaching gig was his two wins in the last three games against the Pats while at Miami. That’s actually not the reason, but I’m sure it will be mentioned on Sunday.
One of six interconference games on the Week 3 slate will be the first meeting this season of first-time head coaches. Vic Fangio faced the Green Bay Packers twice a season while on the Chicago Bears staff, so he knows a thing or two about trying to contain Aaron Rodgers. Fangio’s Broncos will visit the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field to match wits with Matt LaFleur, a man nearly half his age.
The Sunday night game between the NFC champion Rams and Cleveland Browns will attract plenty of attention. Not just because these are teams with high expectations, but the young star power is evident with a pair of No. 1 overall picks starting at quarterback in Jared Goff and Baker Mayfield. How about two former offensive rookies of the year in Todd Gurley and Odell Beckham Jr. coached by guys who like offense. It should be a wonderful display.
By the time Week 3 ends every team will have played at least one home game. Kansas City, Buffalo, Indianapolis and San Francisco get to show off in front of their fans for the first time in Week 3.
