NFL Week 2 Best Bets

After an eventful opening weekend of NFL action we head to what could be a more entertaining Week 2. The lineup includes a Super Bowl rematch from last season when the Philadelphia Eagles visit the Kansas City Chiefs. Behind game MVP Jalen Hurts the Eagles stomped KC, 40-22, in a game that wasn’t event that close, to win their second Super Bowl. Following their Week 1 loss to the Chargers, Kansas City looks to avoid its first 0-2 start since the 2014 campaign, the second under Andy Reid. The Chiefs are a 1-point underdog on the early NFL betting line, just the fifth time since Patrick Mahomes became the starter in 2018 that the Chiefs are catching points in a home game.

The betting week opens with a Thursday Night Football clash between NFC contenders Green Bay and Washington, and closes with the first of four Monday Night Football doubleheaders. The Packers showed off new acquisition Micah Parsons in a dominant win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Parsons recorded one of Green Bay’s four sacks and the Packers held last year’s highest scoring team without a touchdown until the final minute. The Commanders rushed for 220 yards, almost as many as the Giants had total yards (231), in a 21-6 Week 1 win. The Packers opened as a 3.5-point home favorite in the first meeting between the clubs since the 2022 season.

Should fans be concerned about the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens after their losses in Week 1? It’s too early for overreactions and the teams have a chance to get back on track in Week 2 as big favorites in home games against division foes. Breaking in two new coordinators the Lions looked discombobulated in their loss to Green Bay. There were other factors working against them, like playing in Lambeau Field against an opponent that just had their expectations soar after a huge acquisition.

Ben Johnson, the guy who helped turn the Lions into the highest scoring team in the NFL last season, departed for Chicago and brings his new squad to Detroit for showdown. In his head coaching debut Johnson dropped a tough one, 27-24, at home to Minnesota. On the plus side the Bears scored more points than their average from a season ago, but they also lost for the 11th time in their last 12 games. Detroit opened as a 5.5-point favorite. The Lions won both games last season and have taken five of the last six meetings, though the Bears have payouts in three of the last four.

In his first NFL start J.J. McCarthy led the Vikings to a comeback win on Monday Night Football accounting for all three TDs. He makes his home debut in the Sunday Night Football contest against the Falcons. McCarthy and Atlanta’s starter Michael Penix Jr. were drafted in the top 10 in the 2024 NFL draft and face each other for the first time with the Vikings laying 4.5-points on the early line.

Six divisional matchups are on the Week 2 slate including the late Monday Night Football contest between the Chargers and Raiders. A rivalry that dates back to the first year of the American Football League in 1960, the teams have played 130 times in their history. Both were upset winners in Week 1 with the Bolts ending a 7-game skid against Kansas City, 27-21, behind three TD passes from Justin Herbert. LA was a 3-point dog on the closing line.

Pete Carroll was a winner in his Raiders debut getting a 20-13 win over New England as a 2.5-point road dog. Geno Smith threw for 362 yards and a touchdown and first round pick Ashton Jeanty scored his first career TD. Herbert and Smith were two of three QBs to throw for more than 300 yards in Week 1. The Bolts had payout wins in both games last season and opened as a 3.5-point road favorite.
