As we enter Week 5 of the NFL season only two teams remain without a loss and those clubs are sitting atop the NFL futures odds board. The defending Super Bowl champion Eagles moved to 4-0 beating a NFC contender for the second week in a row. Philly held off a late surge by Tampa Bay to post a 31-25 victory on Sunday one week after getting by the Rams with the help of a late blocked field goal. All of their wins have been by seven points or less. Things have been a little easier for the Buffalo Bills, who have won three straight by 10 points or more following their dramatic comeback win over Baltimore in the season opener.

And speaking of the Ravens they’ve had a tough start to the season. They lost to Kansas City on Sunday falling to 1-3, though the losses were to teams ranked right up there with them on the odds board before the season started. A leaky defense and injuries could prevent the Ravens from making up ground. Lamar Jackson left the last game with an injury and the Ravens have allowed the most points and second most yards per game through four weeks. Starting the season with two losses for the first time under Patrick Mahomes some had doubts about the Chiefs. Their run of dominance will end at some point but Mahomes is doing his best to make sure it’s not now. A convincing win over the Ravens on Sunday gave KC back to back victories moving them back to .500.

The road to the Super Bowl got more difficult for the Jets, Saints and Titans. Not that they were projected to get their anyway, but getting to the postseason after starting with four losses is nearly impossible. Only one team, the 1992 San Diego Chargers, qualified for the playoffs after starting the season 0-4. On the flip side four teams dropped from the ranks of unbeaten in Week 4. The Chargers were upset by the Giants, who earned their first win, 21-18. And the 49ers were derailed at home as a 3.5-point favorite by Jacksonville. Indianapolis and Tampa Bay both lost as slight underdogs.

Philadelphia Eagles

We’ll switch conferences this week and take a look at the top 5 Super Bowl favorites from the NFC. That list starts with the defending champion Eagles, who haven’t been dominant this season but they’ve been effective and are one of only two unbeaten clubs. Philly has regressed on defense and the unit nearly caved on Sunday in Tampa. The Eagles led 24-3 late in the first half then got outscored 22-7 the rest of the way. They enter their Week 5 contest with Denver ranked 21st in total defense and 30th in total offense, though they average 27 points.

Green Bay Packers

The Packers looked like the real deal winning their first two games with the help of a stingy defense hardened by the acquisition of Micah Parsons. They became a trendy futures odds pick and were hypnotized by the hype. They were stunned two weeks ago in an upset loss to Cleveland when the offense sputtered. Last week they surrendered 436 yards to the Cowboys and needed a field goal at the OT horn to salvage a tie. Green Bay has the talent to be one of the best in the league if they can put it all together.

Detroit Lions

It’s not easy replacing both coordinators and the transition lasted about a week. After a dud in the season-opening loss to Green Bay, the Lions have exhibited the offense that made them the most feared unit in the NFL a season ago. During their current three-game winning streak the Lions are averaging 41.3 points and the defense chipped in with three sacks and three takeaways in Sunday’s 34-10 win over Cleveland. Aidan Hutchinson has returned from injury to lead the team with 4.0 of Detroit’s 14 sacks, the second-most in the NFL.

Los Angeles Rams

Knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten in a disheartening loss to Philadelphia in Week 3, the Rams rebounded on Sunday handing Indianapolis its first setback of the year. Matthew Stafford had his best game of the season against a strong Colts defense throwing for 375 yards and three TDs and LA caught a few breaks along the way. The young defense hounded Daniel Jones, picking off a pair of passes and recording two sacks. The Rams rank among the top 10 in yards and points allowed while posting the second-highest sack total.

San Francisco 49ers

The tables turned for the Niners on Sunday. After winning their first three games by a total of 10 points they were subdued by the Jags. Returning after missing two games Brock Purdy tossed a pair of interceptions and lost a fumble in the 26-21 loss. Purdy aggravated the injury that kept him out of previous games and he’s doubtful for the Week 5 Thursday Night Football game with the Rams with first place in the NFC West up for grabs.
