2025 NFL Best Bets - Football Lines
The NFL futures odds market isn’t going to overreact after the first week of play. Three teams that were among the preseason favorites lost in Week 1 with Baltimore’s setback to Buffalo on the road having less of an impact than Kansas City’s loss to the Chargers or Detroit’s setback in Green Bay. Those defeats aren’t overly impactful since the opponents sit high up on the Super Bowl odds board. Now, if issues that played a role in those losses continue in Week 2 there’s likely to be some shifting.
Baltimore’s usual stout defense allowed nearly 500 total yards and conceded 16 points in the last four minutes of the fourth quarter as a 40-25 advantage turned into a 41-40 loss. Breaking in two new coordinators the Lions were ambushed by the Packers, 27-13. The NFL’s highest scoring team a season ago didn’t score a touchdown until less than a minute remained in the fourth quarter. Kansas City’s reign as AFC champions looks to be in jeopardy. The Chiefs dropped their opener to AFC West rival Los Angeles and they’ll have to avenge their Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia to avoid losing their first two games of a season since before Patrick Mahomes was drafted.
Buffalo was already the futures odds favorite and strengthened their spot with a miraculous comeback win over the Ravens in a battle between the last two MVPs. Green Bay saw its futures odds shrink after the acquisition of Micah Parsons and the former defensive rookie of the year made an immediate impact recording a sack and three pressures in only 29 snaps. The Packers stymied a Lions team that averaged more than 33 points and 490 yards last season.

Green Bay Packers
We recapped the top 5 favorites in our season opening piece so this week it’s the next five. Green Bay improved its standing when Parsons came aboard giving them that one player who can put them over the top. The Pack wasn’t far off last season with five of their six regular season losses to Minnesota (twice), Detroit (twice) and Philadelphia. Those three each won at least 14 games with Philly capturing the Super Bowl and beating the Pack in the wild card round. Green Bay ranked among the top 8 both offensively and defensively in total yards and points and could be better with Parsons and the maturation of Jordan Love.
Los Angeles Rams
The Rams’ young defense came to life toward the end of last season holding three of their final four regular season opponents to less than 10 points. The group then befuddled the Vikings in a 27-9 wild card win before falling to Philly. The defense was at it again in Week 1 not allowing a touchdown in a 14-9 win over two-time defending AFC South champion Houston. The Rams were bolstered by Matthew Stafford starting the opener after his status was uncertain in the days leading up to it.
San Francisco 49ers
The Niners have a great opportunity to bounce back after a rough 2024. Injuries and other factors led to them cutting their win total in half from 2023 when they won 12 games and reached the Super Bowl. Getting players back healthy along with a last-place schedule will help, as long as the injury bug doesn’t return. Unfortunately the team was hit in its season opening win over Seattle. George Kittle is expected to miss some time and Brock Purdy pulled up lame, though those ailments are considered long-term.
Cincinnati Bengals
With slow starts plaguing them in the past the Bengals took a different approach during the preseason. Joe Burrow and most starters saw more reps than usual and the additional work paid off. The Bengals won their season opener for the first time in four years holding off Cleveland 17-16. Last year they started 0-3 and in 2023 they dropped their first two. They rebounded both years to win nine games but failed to qualify for the postseason. In 2022 when the Bengals reached the AFC Championship they dropped their first two games of the year.
Washington Commanders
We’ll see how the Commanders react this season to being the hunted instead of the hunter. Jayden Daniels helped the club make an eight-game improvement from the 2023 campaign posting its highest win total since winning the Super Bowl in the 1991 campaign. It’s hard to say if Washington’s defense improved after allowing just two field goals in a 21-6 win over New York in the opener. It is after all the Giants.
