SMU Mustangs College Football Lines

In 2024, the SMU Mustangs football program made a profound commitment that will have historic ramifications for years to come. SMU left the American Athletic Conference for the Atlantic Coast Conference. What made the move possible was that SMU agreed not to receive any TV money from the ACC. Instead, the Ponies will be funded entirely by one of the richest, most committed, and passionate donor bases in college sports. The move to the ACC proved successful in 2024, as head coach Rhett Lashlee led the Mustangs to the College Football Playoff. Now the question is if SMU can do it again and become a consistent CFP contender. One thing is for certain. SMU aims to establish itself as a national power in college football.

2025 SMU Mustangs Preview

Before last season, SMU hadn't won a regular-season game against a Power Five, now Power-Four program, since TCU in 2010. But in the ultimate bet-on-yourself move, SMU became a part of the ACC.. SMU will not get a dime of TV revenue until 2032. It was looking to raise the school's profile with a long-term plan, and it helped get the alumni fired up and ready to write checks. Stanford and Cal were the higher-profile teams for the ACC. SMU was expected to be a nice scrimmage for the established programs. That expectation was shattered in 2024.

Perhaps SMU didn't belong in the expanded College Football Playoff. But last year at this exact time, nobody said that SMU would be in the CFP discussion. SMU almost pulled off a thriller of a comeback in a 34-31 loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship, and it got its shot. In the ten years of the College Football Playoff, no two-loss Power Five or Four program would have been left out of an expanded 12-team model - it had to be done. SMU had to be in.

SMU fans and donors don’t care that the Mustangs were outplayed and outclassed in a blowout loss at Penn State. They made it. Everything the school could've dreamed of came true. Texas A&M hasn't done that. Neither has Baylor, Texas Tech, or Houston. Take it outside of the football-mad state - Wisconsin, Florida, Ole Miss, Auburn, Missouri, USC, Utah, and Iowa have yet to make the CFP. In fact, until last year, neither Penn State nor Tennessee had been in, either. Most importantly, it wasn't a fluke.

Regardless, the ACC was fourth among the Power Five conferences by about a gazillion miles. SMU hung up 66 on TCU, annihilated Florida State 42-16, and wiped out a good Louisville squad, ultimately beating six teams that went bowling. Rhett Lashlee has gone 22-6 over the last two seasons and 29-12 since taking the job in 2022.

His recruiting class was terrific; the staff retained everyone important, dominated the transfer portal for key positions, and the depth is better. The starting 22 will be more talented than last year's team.

However, the schedule is tougher - Florida State will likely rebound, Miami is on the slate this time around, and road trips to TCU and Clemson will be daunting. Still, the team will be the hunted, but after last year, gamblers would be wrong to think SMU can't do it all again.

The SMU Mustangs are best known as the program that got the NCAA Death Penalty in 1987. And while that is true, the Mustangs have been somewhat vindicated as a team that was decades ahead of its time in terms of paying players, a practice that most other programs adopted in the 1980s and beyond.

However, SMU is far more than a program that has been trying to recover since its return to action in 1989. With its move to the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Mustangs have the most committed donor base in college football. SMU joined the ACC despite not receiving any TV rights money so that it could become a Power Five program.

SMU has three national championships (1935, 1981, and 1982). The latter two champions are renowned for being part of the Pony Express program, which was eventually shut down due to its payroll operations.
