There are only three unbeaten teams left in the Mountain West, and two of those three teams will meet this Saturday when Boise State hosts San Jose State. The Broncos and Spartans are both 4-0 in conference play, but while that’s expected for Boise State, it’s entirely unexpected for San Jose State. We didn’t see the Spartans in action last week because Fresno State had too many players affected by COVID-19, so they have had a few extra days to prepare for the Broncos.

It’s rare to see the Broncos on network television, but they will be on FOX this week on Saturday, November 28, at 4 p.m. ET.

Boise State Broncos Weekly Matchup

This will be the first time that a Boise State home game has been on one of the major networks since 2014, and it will be the last home game of the year for the Broncos. This team has been incredible at home since 2000, posting a 122-10 record in Boise.

Hank Bachmeier has played very well this year, completing 65.5 percent of his passes for 8.6 YPA with five touchdowns and one interception. He hasn’t shown many ill affects after being sidelined for two weeks after the season opener, and his presence has been necessary considering Jack Sears is reportedly still dealing with issues from the apparent concussion he suffered.

The Broncos might finally have No. 1 running back George Holani back in the lineup. Holani injured his knee in the first quarter of Boise State’s Halloween game against Air Force, and he has been out ever since that juncture. His return would help boost the production of the run game as Andrew Van Buren is averaging just 3.7 YPC. Right tackle Nick Crabtree missed last week’s game against Hawaii too, and he is considered questionable.

Khalil Shakir is having a monster season with 38 receptions for 529 yards and six touchdowns. He is Boise State’s top option with a bullet, and his only “off” game came against Colorado State in a rout two weeks ago. C.T. Thomas has 16 receptions for 312 yards and two touchdowns, while no other wide receiver has more than 75 receiving yards.

San Jose State doesn’t have a great defense. The Spartans are ranked 83rd per SP+, and they have largely benefited from playing some weak offenses. This front seven has done a good job stopping the run, allowing 3.1 YPC, but the secondary is spotty.

The third time seems to be the charm for Nick Starkel. He didn’t have much success at Texas A&M or Arkansas, but he has thrived at San Jose State. Starkel has completed 70.1 percent of passes for 9.2 YPA with nine touchdowns and two interceptions on the season. His offensive line has done a stellar job protecting him, allowing just two sacks, and that has led to some big gains to Bailey Gaither and Tre Walker.

Nick Nash will occasionally come in as a change of pace, and he is a dynamite runner. Nash has run the ball 19 times for 147 yards in SJSU’s last two games, and he isn’t a bad passer either, averaging 6.8 YPA. Tyler Nevens is averaging 5.1 YPC too, but the other two running backs have struggled.

Boise State might have its worst defense in quite some time. The Broncos are outside the top 50 in scoring defense and total defense, and they are 50th in defensive SP+. This front seven hasn’t been great at stopping the run, so Nash could have some real success.

Boise State Broncos Weekly Recap

The Broncos took care of business in a 40-32 victory over Hawaii last week that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. Boise State led 19-3 at halftime and had a 40-17 lead with 10 minutes left before surrendering two late touchdowns to miss out on the cover.

Bachmeier was efficient, completing 21 of 31 passes for 278 yards with a touchdown and an interception, as Shakir was the star of the show once more with 11 receptions for 130 yards and two scores. Van Buren kept the Rainbow Warriors honest with 27 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Hawaii didn’t have much success moving the ball until late in the game. The Rainbow Warriors averaged 4.0 YPC and 5.4 YPA, and those numbers were much worse until the two scoring drives near the end of the fourth quarter.
