Head coach Dave Doeren has never been fully appreciated by the NC State faithful. Yet nobody has produced more wins for the Wolfpack than Doeren. Additionally, Doeren has led the Wolfpack to eight bowl berths. Perhaps that lack of appreciation is because Doeren has never come close to winning an ACC championship. NC State is usually good and sometimes very good under Doeren. However, they have never been great. And that may be more about the NC State program’s football gravity than Doeren himself. Consider that the Wolfpack has only one Top Ten final finish in its history.

2024 North Carolina State Wolfpack Betting Preview

With another year in offensive coordinator Robert Anae’s offense and a group of new weapons, NC State appears primed to put up points at a high clip this season. The defense, which helped keep the Pack in games last year, could have some growing pains without linebacker Payton Wilson anchoring the middle of the unit. If the defense finds its footing, NC State has the opportunity to compete for an ACC Championship Game appearance in 2024.

NC State’s offense took some time to jell in Robert Anae’s first year as the Wolfpack’s coordinator in 2023, but the unit found its stride down the stretch of the season. The Red and White’s offense outscored its opponents 144-77 during the team’s five-game winning streak to close out the regular season.

Now, with a new quarterback in Coastal Carolina transfer Grayson McCall and an explosive group of receivers, the Wolfpack are primed to build off last season’s success. Wideout Kevin “KC” Concepcion is back after winning the ACC’s Rookie of the Year Award, and he will likely be the featured player yet again. But the Pack will not be a one-dimensional threat after adding Ohio State transfer wideout Noah Rogers along with Duke transfer running back Jordan Waters. NC State’s offense will have a weapon on each level of the field, making it tough for defenses to defend just Concepcion in the slot.

The Wolfpack have big shoes to fill defensively after linebacker Payton Wilson departed for the NFL. The Bednarik and Butkus Award winner was a do-it-all defender for the Wolfpack.

While Wilson and his 138 total tackles — 17.5 for a loss — have departed Raleigh, NC State will have a somewhat new-look defense in terms of personnel. The Wolfpack will have a new trio of starting linebackers, while Brandon Cleveland will slide into the starting nose tackle spot.

The secondary, which helped the Pack rank first in the ACC with 17 interceptions last year, returns standout corner Aydan White, but a plethora of new faces on the back end joins him. Doeren and coordinator Tony Gibson added a couple of defensive backs in the spring portal to boost the team's depth and talent level.

The NC State Wolfpack has 11 conference championships. They have never won a national championship. Yet, Wolfpack fans continue to have an overinflated sense of what the program should be compared to its history. Especially when you consider that the last NC State conference championship was in 1979. The only season the Wolfpack finished ranked top-10 was in 1974 under Lou Holtz. Chuck Amato produced the only double-digit win season in program history, leading the Wolfpack to an 11-3 mark in 2002.

Current head coach Dave Doeren is the winningest coach in NC State history. Since 2017, Doeren has produced five CFP Top 25 finishes. During his tenure that began in 2013, Doeren has produced eight bowl seasons.

Last year, Doeren begged fans and donors to step it up to help make NC State competitive on the NIL front. Playing in the ACC is a drag on an aspiring playoff program due to lower revenues. Time will tell if NC State goes all in to compete with the ACC’s elite, Clemson and Florida State.
