North Carolina State Wolfpack College Football Betting

It took until the final game of the season, but the NC State Wolfpack are bowl-eligible for the third consecutive season and for the ninth campaign in the most recent 11. Head coach Dave Doeren remains the winningest coach in NC State history and has brought the program the stability it has long needed since he arrived in 2013. However, needing a desperation rally in the final game against a mediocre North Carolina Tar Heels team is not indicative of a serious ACC contender. Doeren warned everyone last year that NC State needs to step it up in the NIL department.

Hollywood Smothers slipped through the middle of the line for a 2-yard touchdown with 25 seconds left to help NC State beat rival North Carolina in the Tar Heels' final game under Mack Brown.

Smothers' short TD run capped the go-ahead 75-yard drive that pushed the Wolfpack to bowl eligibility. The key play was CJ Bailey's deep ball to Noah Rogers, who snagged a 44-yard catch while taking contact from two defenders to set up the go-ahead score.

That capped a wild finish that saw the Tar Heels take a 30-29 lead on Omarion Hampton's 47-yard catch and run to the end zone with 1:51 left in a huge day for UNC's top weapon.

“These kids just get up and fight - these grown men get up and fight, and I'm proud of them,” Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren said. “Every time they made a play on their sideline, we responded with a play on our sideline.”

Hampton ran for 185 yards and a touchdown to go with four catches for 78 yards.

When it was over, the teams scuffled and had to be separated near midfield after at least one NC State player tried to plant a Wolfpack flag on UNC's home field. Wolfpack players celebrated in front of their fans and even did somersaults while the Tar Heels headed somberly to their locker room.

NC State was picked fourth in the ACC, but an unimpressive opening-night win against Western Carolina foreshadowed trouble.

The NC State Wolfpack has 11 conference championships. They have never won a national championship. Yet, Wolfpack fans continue to have an overinflated sense of what the program should be compared to its history. Especially when you consider that the last NC State conference championship was in 1979. The only season the Wolfpack finished ranked top-10 was in 1974 under Lou Holtz. Chuck Amato produced the only double-digit win season in program history, leading the Wolfpack to an 11-3 mark in 2002.

Current head coach Dave Doeren is the winningest coach in NC State history. Since 2017, Doeren has produced five CFP Top 25 finishes. During his tenure that began in 2013, Doeren has produced eight bowl seasons.

Last year, Doeren begged fans and donors to step it up to help make NC State competitive on the NIL front. Playing in the ACC is a drag on an aspiring playoff program due to lower revenues. Time will tell if NC State goes all in to compete with the ACC’s elite, Clemson and Florida State.
