New Mexico Lobos College Football Betting OddsNCAA Football Betting Online: Bob Davie has been coaching the New Mexico Lobos just as long as he coached at Notre Dame, and he’s enjoyed more success recently. Of course that’s a relative term; success in Albuquerque is much different than it is in South Bend. But the Lobos are happy to have a winner and Davie delivered a nine-win campaign last season, the most at New Mexico in nearly a decade, and the Lobos’ back-to-back winning seasons are the first since the early 2000s. Davie may have been run out of Notre Dame for winning nine games, but at New Mexico he’s a God.

Lobos National Championship Odds: +50000

Lobos Regular Season Win Total: 5.5

It’s been a steady climb for Davie and the Lobos and they capped off the best season of his five-year tenure with a 9-4 record and a New Mexico Bowl win last season. The Lobos won three games in 2013, four in 2014, seven in 2015 and their nine victories last season are tied for the most since a 10-win season in 1982.

We’ve seen teams with less talent be successful by being a little gimmicky. The service academies are a prime example. Air Force, Navy and now Army all run a variation of the triple-option and all have been successful. New Mexico was the best at running the football last season thanks to their option attack. The Lobos led the nation with 350 rushing yards per game and the attack should be equally potent with five of their six leading rushers back.

The departure is a big one with Teriyon Gipson and his 1,269 yards no longer around. But Tyrone Owens wasn’t too shabby. He ran for almost 1,100 yards and averaged 8.0 per carry. Lamar Jordan is the conductor and will have full control after splitting time at quarterback last season. Jordan wasn’t very efficient throwing the ball, but he didn’t need to be. He was the team’s third leading rusher with 739 yards.

Defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove has worked wonders, taking a unit that allowed over 516 yards per game before he was promoted and lowering that number to 395 last season. It might be difficult to maintain that pace with just three returning starters. Boise State is the favorite in the MWC Mountain, but the Lobos have put together a good run and have some talented newcomers. If those players are as good as Davie thinks, the Lobos will be bowling for a third straight season.

The hiring of Davie in 2012 was a puzzling one at the time. Davie hadn’t coached in over a decade and was lured out of the broadcast booth to take the reins in Albuquerque. Though he hadn’t coached since being let go by Notre Dame following the 2001 season, the Lobos needed a trusted name to get them out of the Mike Locksley fiasco.

The program had some stability under Rocky Long, who coached the Lobos from 1998 to 2008. There were five winning seasons and five bowl appearances in that span and the team was always competitive, going 65-69 during Long’s 11 seasons. There were five consecutive non-losing campaigns in that stretch and a school record three consecutive bowl appearances. Long resigned as the program’s winningest coach, saying he wasn’t the right person to lead the program.

Neither was Locksley, who brought the team down to newer depths. He faced complaints from staffers, had a run-in with an assistant coach and produced just two wins in his two-plus seasons. After consecutive 1-11 records, Locksley was fired after the Lobos lost to FCS Sam Houston, their fourth straight to open the 2011 season. Davie has righted the ship and last year he brought New Mexico a share of its first division title since 1997 when the Lobos were in the WAC Mountain.
