NCAA Football Vanderbilt Commodores BettingNCAA Football Betting Online: Expectations are never too high for the Vanderbilt Commodores, as they aren’t one of the better programs in the SEC. However, the team made it a bowl game a season ago and has the majority of key players returning from that squad.

The Commodores don’t recruit well enough to go punch for punch with the elite teams in the conference, but they should compete for another bowl berth. Vanderbilt has a tough schedule once again and the offense will need to get cranking in order to finish with a winning record.

2017 Vanderbilt Commodores at a Glance

Vanderbilt National Championship Odds: 500-1

Vanderbilt Odds To Win The SEC: +23000

Vanderbilt Odds To Win The SEC East: +2800

Vanderbilt Regular Season Win Total: 6

Vanderbilt went 6-7 a season ago, winning a pair of late games against Tennessee and Ole Miss to qualify for a bowl but was blown out by North Carolina State. The Commodores only allowed 24.0 points per game, which was 35th-best in college football, and returns seven starters. Vanderbilt must replace star linebacker Zach Cunningham but should have a solid secondary to lead the way.

The offense is the concern, as it only averaged 23.0 points per game last year, which was one of the worst marks in the nation. Basically every significant skill player is back, including running back Ralph Webb, and the unit should improve with more experience. There will be a lot on the arm of quarterback Kyle Shurmur, who threw for 2,409 yards with nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions a season ago.

If Vanderbilt doesn’t have a decent passing game, its ceiling will be limited.

There is reason for optimism at Vanderbilt, which showed its fight late in 2016. The offense started clicking in the final two regular season games, and it needs to keep progressing this year.

The Commodores aren’t littered with NFL talent up and down the roster like some of the other SEC programs, so they are going to be big underdogs in matchups against teams like Alabama and Florida. If Vanderbilt is going to be successful, it must win the games against similar caliber of competition.

With that in mind, taking the “under” on the regular season wins total seems like the right play.
