NCAA Football Missouri Tigers BettingNCAA Football Betting Online: There are a lot of reasons for optimism regarding the state of the Missouri Tigers football program. Missouri went 4-8 in Barry Odom’s first season as head coach, but a losing record was somewhat expected with all the changes taking place with the team. The offense took big strides forward, but it was the defense that somewhat surprisingly let the team down. If the defense rebounds as expected, the Tigers could end up having a pretty successful campaign in Odom’s second season.

Missouri Odds To Win SEC: +15000

Missouri Regular Season Win Total: 6.5

This is the second year of Missouri running offensive coordinator Josh Heupel’s no-huddle spread offense. Although the Tigers initially struggled with the change, the team really took to it by the end of the year, averaging 29.7 points per game over their last six games.

Drew Lock is going to be the point man in the offense and could be one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC this season. He does need to work on his accuracy though. In 2016, he completed just 54.6 percent of his passes.

However, those numbers were buoyed by his performance in non-conference games. Lock completed just 22.2 percent of his passes against Florida and finished with a completion percentage under 50 percent against West Virginia, LSU, and Tennessee.

The strength of the offense lies in the offensive line, which returns all five starters from last season. Heupel’s offenses have always been effective at keeping the quarterback upright and that remained the same last season. Missouri allowed just 14 sacks last season, despite dropping back to throw more than almost any other team. Tackles Paul Adams and Tyler Howell are the keys to the offensive line.

Once again, the defense will probably be the weaker unit. Only four starters return to a group that struggled last season. The effectiveness of the defense will be in large part determined by how good two new additions are. Defensive tackle Rashad Brandon has shown flashes of brilliance since arriving from junior college and Kansas State transfer Kaleb Prewett is a tackling machine that will play both outside linebacker and nickel back.

You can’t talk Missouri Tigers football without mentioning Don Faurot. Faurot is the namesake of the field that Mizzou currently plays on and was associated with the university for over 80 years. He is the second all-time wins leader for the university with 101 wins over his coaching career and led the team to four major bowl games over his 18-year coaching career.

Dan Devine helped Mizzou football stay relevant and led the school to its first bowl victory in the 1960 Orange Bowl. He was 92-38-7 during his time in Columbia and led the team to its first Top 5 finish in program history too.

The man most commonly associated with Mizzou football these days is Gary Pinkel. Pinkel left as the winningest coach in school history after the 2015 season and shepherded the program into the SEC. Many believed that Mizzou was going to be cannon fodder when making the jump from the Big 12 to the SEC, but he won SEC East titles in 2013 and 2014 and solidified the Tigers status in the conference.

In their five years in the SEC, Missouri has either won its division or finished the season with a losing record. Odom hopes that the former trend will hold in 2017.
