NCAA Football Purdue Boilermakers BettingNCAA Football Betting Online: The Purdue Boilermakers can’t win in the Big Ten playing a conventional style. The glory days of the program came under Joe Tiller in the late 1990s and early 2000s when he fashioned a spread offense the Big Ten hadn’t seen before. The Darrel Hazell era ended with a thud in 2016 as he couldn’t complete his fourth season before getting canned. Under Hazell, the Boilermakers won a total of nine games. Jeff Brohm takes over after his Western Kentucky team led the nation in scoring last season and will attempt to get Purdue back on the Big Ten landscape.

Brohm is a former quarterback and did wonders with a high-powered attack at Western Kentucky in his time there. He needs a QB to make his offense work and he has a good one to start with in his new gig. David Blough led the Big Ten with 279.3 passing yards per game and had 25 touchdowns. But the offense stalled too often due to the high number of interceptions. Blough tossed 21 last year and has 29 in two seasons.

Getting Blough to be more accurate on his attempts and cutting down the picks will help the offense, which averaged just 24.6 points last season. Having a few receivers step up will also help. The top three pass catchers from a year ago have moved on, but the players on the depth chart are salivating for a chance to play in this offensive scheme.

Purdue also needs help on the defensive side of the football after it allowed nearly 446 total yards and 38.2 points per game in 2016. In steps Nick Holt to try and transform the group. Holt was Brohm’s coordinator at WKU for the past three seasons and will work with Anthony Poindexter as co-coordinators in attempt to get things right. There will be experience to work with as six starters return, and stopping the run and coming up with an occasional big play will be crucial.

The schedule doesn’t set up well for another rebuild with the opener against Louisville and games against Missouri and Michigan in the first month. We aren’t expecting the Boilermakers to compete for a Big Ten West title, but signs of improvement are crucial to show the beleaguered fan base that the program is moving in the right direction. Bowl eligibility would be a bonus. However, a four-win season is probably the ceiling.

Purdue isn’t known for winning national championships and Big Ten titles, but the school has produced some of the most prolific passing quarterbacks. Players who have established school, conference and NCAA records to winning Super Bowl titles and Hall of Fame entry in the NFL. When Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl following the 2009 season, Purdue became the second school to have three different QBs start and win a Super Bowl.

Joining the Big Ten in 1896, Purdue is a founding member of the conference and has won eight conference championships. The Boilermakers won the league three times in a four-year span between 1929 and 1932. Their finest season took place in 1943 when they went 9-0, won another conference title and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the AP poll. Purdue made its first bowl appearance in the 1966 season winning the Rose Bowl, beginning a four-year stretch where they would win at least eight games and earn the No. 1 ranking at the start of 1968 season.

The Boilermakers won a school record 10 games in 1979, but wouldn’t enjoy a continued run of success until Tiller took over in 1997. He inherited a program that hadn’t had a winning season in the previous 12 years and produced 10 winning campaigns during his 12-year reign. Purdue participated in a bowl in each of those 10 seasons and won its last Big Ten title in 2000, earning its first Rose Bowl berth since 1966. His teams won at least seven games nine times and had some of the most abundant offenses in the Big Ten and the country.
