NCAA Football SMU Mustangs Betting OddsNCAA Football Betting Online: The SMU Mustangs are on the come up. The program has been down in the dumps since receiving the death penalty from the NCAA, but there is a lot of reason for optimism this season. June Jones seemed like he was turning the program around, but his last two years were a disaster and he left the cupboard bare for his successor Chad Morris. Morris has rebuilt the program according to his philosophy and in his third year it’s time to see how far the Mustangs have come.

Ben Hicks was thrust into the spotlight last season. As a freshman, he was supposed to learn from senior starter Matt Davis, but plans changed after Davis tore an ACL in the opening game. Morris put Hicks into the starting lineup and watched as he improved over the course of the season. Hicks threw just 2 touchdown passes in his first 4 games, but racked up 17 touchdown passes in 8 conference games.

He should be even better in Morris’ offense this season. Morris is an offensive genius that knows how to put his quarterbacks in the best possible position, but it takes some time to learn the system. Hicks will have all of his top receivers from last year back and could step into his own as a sophomore.

The defense got worse as the season wore on in 2016. SMU gave up 50 or more points three times in its last four games, but the worst performance came against Navy. The Midshipmen dropped 75 points and averaged over 10 yards a carry against this defense, so the run defense is a concern. Only a few starters return so this unit might again have issues this season.

Once again, the Mustangs biggest name opponent is TCU. The Horned Frogs have won five straight in this rivalry and it would be a huge upset for SMU to win that one. Road trips to Houston and Navy hurt the Mustangs chances of winning their division, but this team has a decent shot of getting to a bowl with how the rest of their schedule shakes out.

Only a few teams in the American have the history that SMU does. The Mustangs played in their first bowl game in 1924 and went to a Rose Bowl and three Cotton Bowls early in their history.

The Pony Express teams of the early 1980s inspired a 30 for 30 and reminded us of just how dominant those SMU teams were. For four straight seasons SMU won at least 10 games and the Mustangs even competed for national titles. However, the rampant rules violations led to the NCAA levying the death penalty for the first time ever. The program hasn’t been the same since then.

Morris has fans as optimistic as they have ever been. SMU has improved greatly over the past two seasons and it has a great chance to make a bowl this year. The offense should be one of the most exciting in college football.
