NCAA Football Fresno State Bulldogs BettingNCAA Football Betting Online: The Fresno State Bulldogs may have struck gold in the offseason. Fresno State’s 2016 season was awful with the lone win coming against FCS Sacramento State. The Bulldogs wasted little time getting rid of former coach Tim DeRuyter, firing him after the eighth game of the season and immediately began the dance to replace him with Jeff Tedford. Tedford was largely successful in his 11 seasons as the head coach at Cal and is expected to breathe life into this dormant program.

There were a lot of problems with this team in 2016, so it’s hard to place a lot of blame on quarterback Chason Virgil. Virgil wasn’t great last season, completing just 51.6 percent of his passes and averaging 6.28 yards per attempt, but is the frontrunner to be the starter in 2017 because of his experience.

However, there is more than a small chance that Tedford decides to go with someone else. Tedford is a renowned as a quarterback guru and he won’t hesitate to select whichever quarterback he is the most comfortable with. Newcomers Jorge Reyna and James Quentin Davis will both get extended looks in fall practice.

The passing game will need to be better because the Bulldogs cannot run the ball. They averaged a scant 3.2 yards per carry last season and didn’t have a big-play threat. The running game should be better with four returning starters on the offensive line simply because it can’t get much worse.

Tedford is bringing a fresh face in to lead the defense. Orlando Steinauer was the defensive coordinator for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last season and his secondary was one of the best in the CFL. One look at the stats make it seem like the problems were with the run defense, but that’s not the case. Opposing teams just kept it safe and ran the ball against the Bulldogs rather than risk much with the pass.

This non-conference schedule is brutal. The Bulldogs will start off with a win against Incarnate Word, but road trips to Alabama and Washington and a home game against BYU will be extremely difficult to be competitive in. They should improve by a few games, but anything more than that is a stretch.

Two coaches were at the helm of this program for over 30 years. Jim Sweeney put the program on the map with seven bowl appearances during his time in Fresno. He led the team to at least a Top 25 appearance in five straight seasons and went 5-2 in those bowl games.

The coach more frequently associated with the program is Pat Hill. Hill is a legend in the community for making this program one of the best mid-majors in the country year in and year out. At the height of his tenure, he took the Bulldogs to a bowl game in 11 of 12 years.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs are in a six-game losing streak in bowl season dating back to 2007. With how poorly this program has performed the last two seasons though, just getting back to a bowl would be an achievement.
