NCAA Football Toledo Rockets BettingNCAA Football Betting Online: On paper the Toledo Rockets might have the best team in the MAC, but division and conference titles aren’t won on paper. Toledo has won 61 games over the past seven seasons and has at least nine victories in each of the last three seasons. Yet the Rockets haven’t played in a MAC Championship game since 2004. Jason Candle kept the train rolling with a nine-win season in his debut, now the Rockets are looking to put it all together for a MAC title.

2017 Toledo Rockets at a Glance

Rockets National Championship Odds: +50000

Rockets Regular Season Win Total: 8.5

The offense was electric last season and there’s no reason to believe the group will dropoff in 2017. Toledo averaged 38 points per game and scored at least 30 in all but two games. The Rockets also churned out nearly 518 total yards per game to lead the MAC and place eighth nationally. And the guy who directed the show is back for his senior season.

Logan Woodside threw a FBS-high 45 touchdown passes last season and put together one of the finest seasons for a quarterback. He completed nearly 70 percent of his passes for 4,129 yards and was picked off just nine times. Receivers Cody Thompson and Jon’Vea Johnson, who combined for 108 receptions and 21 scores while each averaging over 20 yards per catch, are back to help last year’s 10th-ranked passing attack.

The numbers might not be as gaudy as they were in 2016, but the offense is the best in the conference. The running game is solid with a pair of backs to carry the load following the loss of all-time rushing leader Kareem Hunt. Terry Swanson ran for nearly 1,000 yards in 2015 and Art Thompkins hit for 8.1 yards per pop last season. The line lost three regulars, but a rotation gave several players plenty of experience in the high-tempo scheme.

The Rockets will have some wiggle room on defense thanks to their explosive offense. But the group needs to be a bit stingier when it counts. The group gave up too many big plays and in critical losses to BYU and Ohio early in the year, the D was on the field far too long. Six starters return to the mix, but lack of depth up front could again prove costly against the run.

Toledo joined the MAC for the 1952 season and had an uneventful first 15 years. But in 1967, the Rockets would begin a run unmatched in the conference. They won their first league title in 1967 and went 9-1 overall, but the fun began two years later. Toledo won 35 consecutive games from 1969 through 1971, a streak that ranks as the fifth-longest in major college football. The Rockets also claimed three MAC titles and represented the league in the Tangerine Bowl all three years.

Toledo entered the national rankings for the first time in 1969 and ended the following two years in the top-15 of the AP poll. The Rockets returned to a bowl game a decade later after winning the MAC title in 1981, extending their bowl winning streak to four straight by knocking off San Jose State in the California Bowl. The Rockets won their sixth MAC title and returned to the California Bowl in 1984, suffering their first bowl loss.

Under Nick Saban in 1990, the Rockets shared the conference title, but were left out of the bowl scene despite their 9-2 record. Saban left after one season, turning the program over to Gary Pinkel. In 1995 Toledo was one of three schools to finish the year undefeated going 11-0-1. The Rockets returned to the national rankings and a bowl game. Since the turn of the century, Toledo has enjoyed plenty of success with 12 seasons of eight or more wins and 10 bowl appearances.
