NCAA Football Rutgers Scarlet Knights BettingNCAA Football Betting Online: Chris Ash knew what he was getting into when he took over the Rutgers program last season. At least we hope he did. The Scarlet Knights did everything poorly in 2016, producing the fewest yards per game of any team in the FBS while placing next to last in scoring. They weren’t much better on defense. It all led to a 2-10 record. Rutgers isn’t too far removed from success. The Scarlet Knights won eight games and a bowl in 2014, their first year in the Big Ten. The team suffered through a disaster the next year with player arrests, the suspension of coach Kyle Flood and a NCAA investigation, leaving Ash to rebuild the program.

When predicting the Big Ten East standings it would be easier to start from the bottom, that’s where a majority of prognosticators will put Rutgers, and deservedly so after a horrendous 2016 campaign. Rutgers scored a combined 89 points in its two early season wins over Howard and New Mexico, 10 points fewer than what it totaled in the other 10 games. And there were three embarrassing losses to the East’s top teams. There is only one way for the program to go.

Rutgers was dead last in the FBS in total offense last season with just over 283 yards per game, and they averaged 15.7 points, better only than UConn’s 14.8. Take away the 52 points scored against FCS Howard and the Scarlet Knights averaged 12.4 points against FBS competition.

Former Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill was brought in as the offensive coordinator and he’ll have to work magic with the quarterback position. Incumbent Giovanni Rescigno is back, but after a woeful 2016, the job is up for grabs. Louisville transfer Kyle Bolin wasn’t going to displace Lamar Jackson so he committed to Rutgers with the intention of starting. Bolin completed 58 percent of his passes for 2,104 yards and 13 touchdowns with the Cardinals.

The offense also gets a boost with the return of Janarion Grant. The team’s most dynamic player was lost after only four games due to injury. Grant caught 20 passes for 210 yards, ran for another 138 and three scores and was a threat on kick returns. The offense will be better in 2017, the defense will improve as well, but the schedule is brutal with Washington on the non-conference slate and the rest of the East. Doubling the win total would be a feat, but being more competitive would show signs the program is moving in the right direction.

There hasn’t been much success on the gridiron, but Rutgers is considered by many to the birthplace of college football. Back on Nov. 6, 1869 Rutgers and Princeton played in the first intercollegiate football game. Because of that Rutgers has the oldest college football program in the country.

Rutgers posted the first of its two undefeated seasons in 1961 by going 9-0, ending the season with Alabama as the only undefeated teams in college football. Rutgers would produce its finest season 15 years later with an 11-0 record and a No. 17 ranking in the final AP poll. From 1972 to 1980 the program would produce nine consecutive winning seasons, the longest run of success in the school’s history, and Rutgers would compete in its first bowl game in 1978, losing the Garden State Bowl.

Rutgers joined the Big East Conference in 1991 and had limited success until Greg Schiano took over the program in the early 2000s. The Scarlet Knights ended a string of 12 straight losing seasons by going 7-5 in 2005 and playing in just the second bowl game in school history. The next year they would match the program record with 11 wins, get their first bowl victory and the highest ranking in the AP poll at No. 7. Following a 9-4 campaign and a fifth straight bowl win in 2011, Schiano bolted for the NFL. Flood led Rutgers to a Big East title in his first season, but the roof collapsed in 2015, leaving Ash to pick up the pieces.
