NCAA Football Betting Online: There was a lot to like about the Southern Miss Golden Eagles a season ago, but ill-timed lapses resulted in a 7-6 season. Southern Miss was able to claim a bowl victory over Louisiana-Lafayette, but had higher hopes for 2016.
The Eagles bring back a lot of talent and hope to improves this year, but if it happens, it will be with another quarterback holding the reins. While Southern Miss has good pieces, it won’t go anywhere without a solid signal-caller.
Southern Miss had some nice offensive numbers in 2016, finishing with 33 points per game. They will need to replace Nick Mullens, who had 3,272 passing yards with 24 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. The battle to replace him will showcase sophomore Keon Howard against junior Kwadra Diggs, with Howard the more mobile of the two and Diggs a more traditional pocket passer.
The Eagles will lean on star running back Ito Smith, who ran for 1,459 yards while adding 459 receiving yards and totaled 19 touchdowns. The receiving corps should be solid again.
The defense was ranked well against the run and the pass last year, but didn’t force many turnovers and subsequently gave up too many points in certain games.

Southern Miss should be confident in itself, as it was better than its record indicated a year ago. The Eagles feel like they can go better than .500 in Conference USA play this season as long as they find a quarterback to lead the way.
Keep an eye on the regular season win total for Southern Miss, because if it is too low, this is the type of group that will be able to surpass that projection in the 2017 season.
