NCAA Football UTEP Miners Betting OddsNCAA Football Betting Online: The UTEP Miners finished with only four wins a season ago, as their defense was poor and the offense wasn’t much better. The discouraging thing for the 2017 team? The projections have them struggling even more.

UTEP is tied for the lowest expected win total in Division I football this season and it may take a minor miracle for the Miners to simply make a bowl game. There isn’t a lot to be optimistic about at UTEP, but the team is hoping to outperform those projections despite a tough schedule.

2017 UTEP Miners at a Glance

UTEP Regular Season Win Total: 2.5

UTEP’s wins last season came on the heels of a strong running game. Star running back Aaron Jones finished the year with 229 carries for 1,773 yards and 17 touchdowns, one of the lone bright spots on an offense which only averaged 26.3 points per contest.

The problem for the Miners is that Jones is gone now and will be tough to replace. The player counted on to take over is Quadraiz Wadley, who didn’t make a big impact a year ago but is hoping to step in and help out the offense. UTEP does bring back quarterback Ryan Metz, who finished last season with 1,375 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and four interceptions.

The defense gave up 34.9 points per game and didn’t come up with a lot of turnovers. Much of the impetus for improvement will be on the linebacker corps. The leader is Alvin Jones, who is one of the better defenders in Conference USA, while Dante Lovilette and Jayson VanHook make up the rest of the unit.

UTEP will need to ramp up the pass rush in order to improve defensively this season.

It’s been a rough decade for UTEP, which has hadn’t had a lot of success. The Miners won seven games in 2014 but otherwise hasn’t had a winning season since 2006. UTEP went 5-7 in 2015 and 4-8 a year ago, with projections expecting them to drop again.

It’s always good to have a quarterback returning, and maybe that can spark the offense. However, the Miners lost their most talented skill player and have precious few game-changers, which could mean a lot of losses piling up. However, the win total is so low that even a couple good bounces could result in the “over” being the correct wager for the season.
