Head coach Jamey Chadwell and his Liberty Flames lost credibility this season.  Liberty made the New Year’s Day bowl lineup last year, their first season under Chadwell.  But after that trip to the Fiesta Bowl, the Flames will be taking a big step down in the 2024 postseason.  Losses to the Kennesaw State Owls and Jacksonville State Gamecocks obliterated Liberty’s dreams of a College Football Playoff berth.  Last week, Liberty flashed a look at what it used to be with a dominant win over the WKU Hilltoppers.  Most importantly, the Flames got the money.

In 2018, Liberty University went Big Time with its football program. From 1988 to 2017, Liberty was a member of the FCS but graduated from the FBS in 2018. Turner Gill was the head coach for that first FBS season and went 6-6 to set a good foundation.

Hugh Freeze arrived in 2019 and produced four bowl games in four years. In 2020, Freeze led the Flames to a 10-1 season with a final national ranking of 17th. Freeze gave the Liberty program substantial credibility with his success at Ole Miss in the SEC. Freeze was innovative, dynamic, and a strong recruiter. He built a Liberty program built to sustain success.

In 2023, Jamey Chadwell arrived from Coast Carolina, where he became a Group of Five legend. Chadwell put together a spectacular first season as the Liberty head coach with a 13-1 record and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl. The Flames finished with a final national ranking of 25th and with the promise of a strong future.
