The MLS continues to grow by leaps and bounds with the addition of St. Louis SC. The top league in American soccer had just 18 teams in 2014, but the MLS is now on par with the rest of the professional sports in the United States when it comes to the number of teams. St. Louis SC is the 29th team in the MLS as this is the seventh straight season that at least one expansion franchise has been added to the league. It appears that St. Louis will be the second-to-last expansion franchise in this growth era as San Diego was announced as the league’s 30th team in mid-May with MLS Commissioner Don Garber announcing that the league was not currently looking to expand beyond 30 franchises.

Although the lion’s share of sports franchises struggle in their expansion season, that isn’t guaranteed, and St. Louis City SC will look to have success similar to what we have seen from Atlanta United FC, Los Angeles FC, and Inter Miami CF over the last several years. The club isn’t swinging for the fences when it comes to transfers though, as its two highest profile additions this offseason are two Bundesliga players who aren’t widely known in the US.
Roman Burki will make the move to the United States after earning 233 caps as the starting goalkeeper for Borussia Dortmund. Burki is expected to immediately be one of the top goalkeepers in the MLS and prioritizing his signing will likely make this a defensive-minded team in its first season.
The other big name that St. Louis City FC brought in is Joao Klauss. He was never able to make much of a breakthrough with 1899 Hoffenheim, but he did shine in loan spells in both Finland and Austria. Klauss was the club’s first designated player, and he is expected to be the top goal scorer this campaign.

The 2023 MLS campaign will be the first season for St. Louis City FC. The city seriously began pursuing an MLS franchise shortly after the St. Louis Rams moved back to Los Angeles at the end of the 2015 NFL season. After receiving the necessary funding for the stadium, the MLS announced that St. Louis City FC would be awarded a franchise on August 20, 2019. The team was supposed to begin play in 2022, but complications due to COVID led the team to begin play the following year.
It was well worth the wait for fans as St. Louis City FC not only won its inaugural game, but in fact, the club won its first five games to set a new mark for an expansion franchise. We have seen most other expansion clubs struggle recently, but it looks like St. Louis City FC will be a postseason contender even with the team putting together an underwhelming performance in April.
