Daniel Gadzag was one of the best players in the league last year and earned a spot on the MLS Best XI at the end of the season. Gadzag netted 22 goals and 10 assists, and he became just the sixth player ever to score at least 20 goals and 10 assists in an MLS season. This offense runs through him, but it doesn’t need to do much considering the Union have the best defense in the league.
Incredibly, the Union have the two best defenders in the league. Jakob Glesnes was named MLS Defender of the Year in 2022, and Kai Wagner finished runner-up in the voting. Both Glesnes and Wagner were included on the Best XI for 2022, as Philly allowed a record low 26 goals over the span of 34 matches. Andre Blake made MLS history too as the first player to be named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year three times in a career after posting 15 clean sheets.

Philadelphia treaded water in the MLS for several years. The Union finished with a winning record just once in their first eight seasons, but they managed to make the US Open Cup Finals three times in that stretch. Unfortunately, Philadelphia’s bid to pick up silverware was denied all three times as Seattle beat the Union in extra time in 2014, Sporting Kansas City knocked off Philadelphia in penalties in 2015, and Houston hammered Philly 3-0 in 2018.
The last few years have been good for the Union though. Philadelphia has finished with a winning record in five straight seasons, and the team has finished top three in the Eastern Conference for four straight years. They ended up claiming their first trophy in 2020 when they won the Supporters’ Shield, and the Union nearly won their first MLS Cup in 2022 before losing in penalties to Los Angeles FC.
