Philadelphia Union Odds To Win 2019 MLS Cup

Philadelphia Union Betting

The Philadelphia Union are still looking to make their mark on Major League Soccer. Philadelphia came into the league as an expansion franchise in 2010, and they have finished the year with a winning record just twice in nine years. The first time came in their second season, when the Union were able to finish in third place in the Eastern Conference, and Philadelphia finished just above .500 last year. In their nine-year history, the organization has only finished in the top five of the Eastern Conference one time.

During their time in the MLS, the Union have only been able to make it to the postseason three. In all three occasions, they were knocked out in their initial match, leaving the club still in search of their first playoff victory.

It hasn’t been all bad for Philadelphia though. The Union have finished runner-up for the U.S. Open Cup three times, nearly winning the competition in 2014, 2015, and 2018. In 2014, Philadelphia was able to take the Seattle Sounders to extra time before falling 3-1. They suffered a tougher loss the following year though, getting to a shootout with Sporting Kansas City after a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation. The shootout was close, but Sporting KC was eventually able to grab a 7-6 victory. The Union stood no chance last year, getting blasted by the Houston Dynamo in their lone road game in the cup tournament.

Philadelphia Union Mid-Season Update

At the halfway point of the season, the Philadelphia Union are atop the Eastern Conference. They have potted more goals than any other team in the East, which no one saw coming at the start of the season given this team’s lack of a traditional forward.

Scoring has been a team effort. No player has tallied more than four goals through the first half of the 2019 season, but four different players (Ilsinho, Jamiro Monteiro, Kacper Przybylko, and the departed David Accam) have nabbed four goals apiece.

Halftime adjustments have been a huge part of this team’s success. Philadelphia has scored 22 of its 31 goals in the second half this season, and that’s a credit to head coach Jim Curtin’s ability to make the necessary changes.

In particular, Ilsinho has thrived as a super substitute. The Brazilian midfielder has come on as a substitute in 10 of his 14 appearances with the Union, and he has made his impact felt. He has four goals and five assists so far in 2019, but two of those goals and two of those assists were game winners.

The Union will need to have some cushion in the standings ahead of their final seven games if they are going to hold on to win the East. They will be facing four of the other top teams in the Eastern Conference during this stretch, as well as Los Angeles FC.
