After two years in the Eastern Conference, Nashville SC shifted over to the Western Conference with the addition of Charlotte FC. They were originally supposed to move to the West in 2021, but their switch was pushed back one year as Charlotte decided to wait an extra year to join the league due to COVID. Nashville SC might eventually move back to the Eastern Conference if St. Louis and Sacramento do end up being the next expansion franchises, and they would appreciate the opportunity to regularly play fellow Southern cities like Atlanta, Orlando, and Miami.

Nashville SC did not have the same fanfare other recent expansion franchises did upon joining the league, but the front office has done an excellent job building an immediate contender in the Music City. They now have their own soccer-specific stadium called Geodis Park, and they are hoping to bring a title to Tennessee.

Nashville SC 2022 Preview

Everything starts with the defense for Nashville SC. Walker Zimmerman remains the leader of the team, and he has now been named an MLS Best XI selection for three consecutive seasons. Zimmerman is still in his prime as he just turned 29 on May 19, and he is synonymous with the club at this point.

We saw more offense out of this club last season as Hany Mukhtar made his presence felt all over the pitch. Mukhtar was named to the MLS Best XI after tallying 16 goals and 12 assists for Nashville SC in 2021, and he has four goals and five assists through 13 games this season.

C.J. Sapong was a big help for the club last season with 12 goals and five assists after coming over from Chicago Fire FC. Sapong is certainly happy to be out of the Windy City given that club’s struggles, and Sapong has four goals and three assists through 13 games.

Nashville was the most successful expansion team in 2020. While Inter Miami received a lot of the press, Nashville put together a solid campaign. The team was competitive throughout the year and finished with a positive goal differential, as the back line was one of the best in the MLS.

This club leaned heavily on its back line in the playoffs. Nashville beat fellow expansion club Inter Miami 3-0 in the play-in round and then upset Toronto FC 1-0 in extra time in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs. They ended up holding the Columbus Crew scoreless through 90 minutes too before surrendering two quick goals to the eventual MLS Cup champions.

They proved that their expansion season was no fluke, losing just four matches in 34 games in 2021. Nashville settled for an absurd 18 draws though, as this team continued to rely on a stingy defense led by Walker Zimmerman. Zimmerman and midfielder Hany Mukhtar were both named to the MLS Best XI for their play, as Nashville finished in third place in the Eastern Conference. We saw them beat Orlando City SC 3-1 in the first round of the playoffs before losing to the Philadelphia Union in penalties in the conference semifinals.
