Dave Romney was dealt to the New England Revolution before the start of the season, but most of Nashville’s stars return with an eye on winning the first playoff game in franchise history. Walker Zimmerman has been incredible as the team’s leader since its inception, and he will go down as one of the best defenders we’ve ever seen in the MLS. Los Angeles FC had to let someone go at the end of the 2019 season, and Nashville were delighted to have the opportunity to add Zimmerman.
Hany Mukhtar is the reigning MLS MVP, and he is the key to the attack for Nashville SC. Mukhtar was instrumental to the club’s success on the pitch last season, but he does need some other players to step up alongside him. That has Nashville hoping that former Designated Players Jan Gregus and Fafa Picault can have an impact. Both players were acquired for relatively nothing, so the front office is hoping to strike big on one of them.

Nashville was the most successful expansion team in 2020. While Inter Miami received a lot of the press, Nashville put together a solid campaign. The team was competitive throughout the year and finished with a positive goal differential, as the back line was one of the best in the MLS.
This club leaned heavily on its back line in the playoffs. Nashville beat fellow expansion club Inter Miami 3-0 in the play-in round and then upset Toronto FC 1-0 in extra time in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs. They ended up holding the Columbus Crew scoreless through 90 minutes too before surrendering two quick goals to the eventual MLS Cup champions.
They proved that their expansion season was no fluke, losing just four matches in 34 games in 2021. Nashville settled for an absurd 18 draws though, as this team continued to rely on a stingy defense led by Walker Zimmerman. Zimmerman and midfielder Hany Mukhtar were both named to the MLS Best XI for their play, as Nashville finished in third place in the Eastern Conference. We saw them beat Orlando City SC 3-1 in the first round of the playoffs before losing to the Philadelphia Union in penalties in the conference semifinals.
We saw Nashville make history in 2022. Mukhtar and Zimmerman joined a short list of teammates that were selected to the MLS Best XI in consecutive seasons. It was the fourth straight Best XI selection for Zimmerman, and he is the fifth player in league history to be selected to that squad four consecutive times. Meanwhile, Mukhtar was named the MLS MVP after notching 23 goals and 11 assists to contribute to over 65% of Nashville’s goals.
