Austin FC MLS Betting

Austin FC continued a recent trend we have seen in the MLS. About half the expansion teams over the last decade have been fantastic in their second seasons, highlighted by Atlanta United tearing up the league on their way to the 2018 MLS Cup. We saw the Oaks reach the Western Conference Finals behind a spectacular season from Argentine midfielder Sebastian Driussi, and now the question is what they will do for an encore in their third season. Gyasi Zardes and Will Bruin joined Maxi Urruti up top this offseason, so this has the potential to be a devastating attack that can come at opponents from multiple angles.

Austin FC 2023 Preview

Sebastian Driussi finished one goal behind Hany Mukhtar for the MLS Golden Boot, and he was in serious contention to be named the league MVP. Driussi was simply sublime in 2022, tallying 22 goals and seven assists in 34 regular season appearances. He is entering the prime of his career too, and his assist totals could significantly increase with Zardes, Bruin, and Urruti on the roster.

There have been some significant changes in defense. Ruben Gabrielsen left after just one season, so Austin FC traded for Adam Lundkvist and acquired Leo Vaisanen to help their sturdiness in the back. We were already expecting to see regression based off their xG numbers in 2022, but the defense could be much worse this season.

Austin FC was announced as an expansion franchise in 2018 and became the MLS’ 27th team in 2021. They immediately established rivalries with fellow Texas teams FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo, but they couldn’t find much success on the field in their inaugural season. They finished 24th in the overall league table, but they were one point ahead of Houston and just two points behind Dallas as Texas teams were not good in 2021.

The franchise didn’t have to wait long for its first win, going on the road to beat the Colorado Rapids 3-1 in their second match. They had to play the first two months of the season on the road though, as the league wanted to give the construction crew ample time to finish Austin’s new stadium. They finally made their home debut on June 27, 2021, and they drew the Columbus Crew 0-0 in front of a sellout crowd. Austin hammered the Portland Timbers 4-1 in its next match on July 1 to record its first home victory.

The Oaks did have a breakout season in 2022 though. Austin FC finished with the second-best record in the Western Conference thanks to an awesome season from captain Sebastian Driussi. He became the first player in club history to earn an MLS Best XI selection after netting 25 goals in league play. Driussi was awesome in the playoffs, scoring three goals in leading Austin FC past Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas into the Western Conference Finals before they were blanked by eventual champions Los Angeles FC.
