Columbus Crew SC Odds To Win 2019 MLS Cup

Columbus Crew Betting

The Columbus Crew were one of the original 12 MLS franchises. The MLS took a big chance by putting a franchise in central Ohio, but it has paid off in spades. They have been able to slowly build up a fanbase over more than two decades, and their success led other sports to consider putting teams in Columbus. It also may have helped soccer catch fire in the Queen City too, as evidenced by the ascent of FC Cincinnati.

There were no major professional sports teams in Columbus before the Crew came to town. That helped Columbus in a number of ways as fans were quick to latch onto the team, and that led to them becoming the first MLS franchise to play in a soccer-specific stadium. Rather than play in a half-empty, cavernous football stadium like many teams were forced to do, they were able to play in a more quaint venue that helped them gain more ravenous support.

Columbus has rewarded its fans with a decent amount of success. The Crew won the MLS Cup in 2008, and they won the U.S. Open Cup in 2002. They have remained competitive over their time in the MLS as well, even though they aren’t able to make the big splashes in free agency that other clubs are able to.

Columbus Crew SC Mid-Season Update

The odds on the Columbus Crew to win the MLS Cup should be much longer than this. Columbus lost their best playmaker in the midfield for the season in late May when it was announced that Federico Higuain tore his ACL. Higuain was the one player able to create opportunities for his teammates in this part of the field, so losing him is tragic. He assisted on five of Columbus’ 15 goals this season, and no other player has more than two assists.

Columbus will likely stumble over the next few weeks too. Goalkeeper Zach Steffen, midfielder Wil Trapp, and forward Gyasi Zardes are currently representing the United States at the Gold Cup, and center back Jonathan Mensah will be joining Ghana for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Crew have been solid at home this season with a 4-3-2 record in Mapfre Stadium, but they have lost six straight road games. They started the season strong, posting a 4-1-1 record through the first give weeks, yet Columbus has now lost eight of its last ten matches.

That inability to win on the road is going to hurt Columbus. The Crew have 10 more road tilts this season, and they will be away from home for five of their last seven matches. That does not bode well for their postseason hopes.
