New York City has two teams in nearly every sport. In baseball, there are the Yankees and the Mets, football has the Giants and the Jets, and hockey has the Islanders and the Rangers. Thus, it’s only natural that soccer would follow suit and grant the Big Apple a second franchise to complement the New York Red Bulls.
Of course, that has led to a fierce rivalry with their fellow New York team. New York City FC has not been able to get the better of its inner-city counterpart, losing nine of the 16 matches that they have played against each other. The Red Bulls have outscored NYCFC 34-16 in those matches, but NYCFC have fared better recently.
New York City FC are owned by Manchester City and the New York Yankees. They play their matches in Yankee Stadium, and they have been one of the MLS’ most successful clubs in their brief history. They have made the playoffs for each of the last four seasons, finishing in the top three in the Eastern Conference each time, but they only just won their first US Open Cup match last season.
