Orlando City SC finally claimed its first piece of hardware last season. The Lions were able to win the 2022 US Open Cup Final over USL Championship club Sacramento Republic 3-0, and that earned the club its first appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League. Unfortunately, just like we have seen with the MLS Cup Playoffs, Orlando City SC lost its first playoff game in that competition too. The Lions would love to take that next step, but that seems unlikely considering what they lost in the offseason.

Orlando City SC 2023 Preview

Junior Orso had arguably been Orlando City’s best player over the last few years, but he wanted to return to Brazil, so the club agreed to part ways with its superstar. Orso appeared in 100 games for the Lions between 2020 and 2022, and he was able to set the tone during his time on the pitch. He wasn’t the only key player that Orlando City SC lost though as Joao Moutinho and Ruan also departed and leave behind big holes to fill.

The Lions previously focused on Brazilian talent under their former owners, but they are now turning their attention to other leagues. Orlando City SC pursued Martin Ojeda for over a year and finally landed the Argentine winger prior to the start of the season, and they also brought inv22-year-old Ramiro Enrique with an eye to the future.

Orlando City’s admittance into the MLS kicked off the second big wave of expansion in the league. The MLS had been dying to get a team back into Florida after the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny folded after just six seasons back in 2001, but all their attempts failed until the Lions came along. Orlando has proven to be a fertile market as fans flocked to see the club at the old Citrus Bowl prior to a soccer-specific stadium being built.

It was a difficult first five seasons for Orlando City SC. The Lions posted diminishing returns after a decent start, finishing lower and lower in the standings each year. That was despite ownership bringing in star players like Kaka from AC Milan and others, but the 2020 campaign was a banner year for the club.

The Lions nearly won the MLS is Back Tournament in their back yard. Orlando City knocked off Inter Miami and New York City FC in the Group Stage, and they ended up beating Montreal, Los Angeles FC, and Minnesota United before losing to the Portland Timbers in the finals. They carried that momentum into the rest of the season though to make the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

They followed that up with a second straight playoff appearance in 2021. Orlando City SC went on the road and won its season finale to lock up a playoff spot, but the Lions fell to Nashville SC 3-1 after Daryl Dike opened the scoring in the 14th minute.

The club won its very first trophy in 2022 by hammering the New York Red Bulls in the semifinals and Sacramento Republic FC in the finals to win the US Open Cup. Orlando City SC made the playoffs for the third straight season too, but the Lions were once again one and done and are looking for their first postseason win.
