It might be a long year for Orlando City SC. The Lions had their two best seasons in club history in 2020 and 2021, but Nani, Daryl Dike, and Chris Mueller all made the move to Europe in the offseason. That puts a lot of pressure on the young Facundo Torres who is coming over from Uruguay on a $7 million-plus transfer fee and Ercan Kara from Rapid Wien. Torres and Kara have both been tagged as Designated Players, so a lot of the club’s hopes for 2022 depend upon their play.

Orlando City SC 2022 Preview

The Lions are currently in third place in the Eastern Conference a week before the extended Memorial Day weekend break. Orlando City SC is carrying a 6-4-3 record, but the club has a negative goal differential after three blowout losses.

Kara has three goals and two assists in 13 games, and Torres has two goals and four assists in 12 games. Mauricio Pereyra has helped although he has been injured, but he has yet to score a goal although he has a team-high five assists.

The defense has been pretty solid, allowing just a shade over a goal a game. The center backs are particularly good, and that has made this team a probable playoff squad even with the loss of so much of their offensive talent from the last couple seasons.

Orlando City is one of Major League Soccer’s newest franchises. The MLS had been dying to get a team back into Florida after the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny folded after just six seasons back in 2001, but all their attempts failed until the Lions came along. Orlando has proven to be a fertile market as fans flocked to see the club at the old Citrus Bowl prior to a soccer-specific stadium being built.

It was a difficult first five seasons for Orlando City SC. The Lions posted diminishing returns after a decent start, finishing lower and lower in the standings each year. That was despite ownership bringing in star players like Kaka from AC Milan and others, but the 2020 campaign was a banner year for the club.

The Lions nearly won the MLS is Back Tournament in their back yard. Orlando City knocked off Inter Miami and New York City FC in the Group Stage, and they ended up beating Montreal, Los Angeles FC, and Minnesota United before losing to the Portland Timbers in the finals. They carried that momentum into the rest of the season though to make the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

They followed that up with a second straight playoff appearance in 2021. Orlando City SC went on the road and won its season finale to lock up a playoff spot, but the Lions fell to Nashville SC 3-1 after Daryl Dike opened the scoring in the 14th minute.
