Much like we saw with the Cleveland Browns under Hue Jackson, it somehow did get even worse the following season for FC Cincinnati. After being one of the worst teams in MLS history in 2020, FC Cincinnati was absolutely catatonic in 2021, winning just four of 34 matches and finishing with a scant 20 points. The playoffs seem to be a pipe dream at this point, so fans of FC Cincinnati are hoping for just respectability coming into the 2022 campaign.

If FC Cincinnati can’t get out of the cellar, their fans would at least be content with a win or two over the Columbus Crew in the Hell is Real Derby. Cincinnati is 1-4-3 against in-state rival Columbus since joining the MLS in 2019.

FC Cincinnati 2022 Preview

This is already the best season in FC Cincinnati history. It looked like it would be more of the same for the club after a 5-0 loss to Austin FC in the season opener, and that was followed up by another loss. However, FC Cincinnati won four games in a two-week stretch from April 30 to May 14 to surge into the middle of the Eastern Conference standings. They have already won four road games this season, and that has fans thinking of the postseason ahead of the post Memorial Day weekend break.

Luciano Acosta was the one bright spot for FC Cincinnati last season, and he has been great for the club this year. Acosta has five goals and five assists through 13 games, and he may end up being the first FC Cincinnati player ever named to the MLS Best XI.

The only other offensive threat for this team has been Brandon Vazquez. He is currently tied for second in the MLS with seven goals, and he also has two assists to his credit. That has led to speculation surrounding his first call-up with the USMNT, as Vazquez and Acosta have led FC Cincinnati out of the basement.

Alec Kann was supposed to be the first-choice goalkeeper at the start of the season after being acquired from Atlanta United, but he has been supplanted by 21-year-old Roman Celentano. The former University of Indiana standout goalkeeper has proven he belongs at the next level, and Celentano’s emergence has also helped FC Cincinnati thrive.

FC Cincinnati has not followed in the footsteps of recent expansion teams like Atlanta United and Los Angeles FC. While Atlanta and LAFC had immediate success, FC Cincinnati was abysmal, finishing with a 6-22-6 record and a -44 goal differential in 2019.

It appeared that FC Cincinnati would at least have a decent inaugural campaign after a promising start. Despite a murderer’s row in their first three games with tilts against the Seattle Sounders, Atlanta United, and the Portland Timbers, Cincy overcame the odds by playing Atlanta United to a draw and beating Portland in their home opener. They were 2-2-2 in their first six matches, but the wheels came off after that hot start.

The second season was just as bad for FC Cincinnati. This was the worst team in the league with a 4-15-4 record and a -24 goal differential. FC Cincinnati finished with five less points than any other team in the MLS.

Somehow, FC Cincinnati was even worse in 2021. The club finished with a ghastly 20 points in 34 matches, and they were outscored by a 2:1 margin. They finished eight points behind the next worst team (Toronto FC), and their -37 goal differential was 10 goals worse than any other club.
