Perhaps the time of expansion MLS clubs immediately being competitive is at an end. Atlanta United and Los Angeles FC dazzled in their debut seasons and quickly established themselves as contenders in 2017 and 2018. Inter Miami and Nashville SC were respectable in their first seasons, but not much more. Meanwhile, FC Cincinnati have been an abject disaster over their first three seasons in the MLS, and Austin FC finished with the second-worst record in the Western Conference as the newest expansion team last year. That doesn’t bode well for new owner David Tepper and Charlotte FC, especially considering how the Carolina Panthers have looked since Tepper purchased them a few years ago.

As we see with several other MLS teams, Charlotte FC shares its stadium with a professional football team. Charlotte FC will play in Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers, and that led to the club setting an MLS record in their first home game. Over 74,000 fans showed up for the first game in franchise history, breaking the all-time MLS single game record.

Miguel Angel Ramirez is the first head coach in Charlotte FC history. Ramirez has endeared himself to the local media with his extremely unguarded press conferences where he isn’t afraid to share his opinion. He was very blunt and didn’t shy away from expressing his frustration when a deal to land Darwin Machis fell through in February, noting that it could keep Charlotte FC from making the postseason in its first year.

The club proved it wasn’t afraid to spend money though by using all three of their Designated Player slots. They reportedly paid $5 million to acquire Karol Swiderski from PAOK, and he will be at the top of the formation. Fellow Polish international Kamil Jowziak was signed from Championship side Derby County shortly after the start of the season too.

Jordy Alcivar was brought in from Ecuador to be the club’s rock in the midfield, but he is still raw at just 22 years old. Charlotte FC will also lean heavily on Anton Walkes and Guzman Corujo in the back line, and Walkes was the first pick in the expansion draft.

It’s going to be very tough for Charlotte FC to make the playoffs in their first season. Most MLS beat writers have them finishing last or second-to-last in the Eastern Conference, as there isn’t a lot of proven talent at the MLS level. Their first win might not come until they host FC Cincinnati in late March.
