Charlotte FC became the newest MLS franchise last season. David Tepper purchased the rights to the expansion franchise around the same time that he purchased the Carolina Panthers, and he had about the same amount of success in year one. The Crown did set a new single-game regular season attendance record though, and they were somewhat competitive in their inaugural season. Karol Swiderski was the first Designated Player in Charlotte FC history. Swiderski was signed from PAOK in Greece to be Charlotte’s primary striker, and he had a solid debut season considering there wasn’t much talent around him. He led the club with 10 goals, and he also tied for the team lead with six assists. Swiderski should once again be the focal point of the attack in 2023.
Unfortunately, the club lost second-leading scorer Daniel Rios. He notched seven goals for Charlotte in 2022, and his finish to the campaign led to Rios being transferred to Chivas in Liga MX. The good news is that Enzo Copetti should be a more than adequate replacement after arriving from Racing Club, and Copetti scored 21 goals and five assists during his 47 appearances for the team last season.
That could lead to Charlotte competing for a playoff spot in 2023. The club also added midfielder Ashley Westbrook and defender Bill Tuiloma, and both players are experienced veterans. As a result of being an expansion franchise, Charlotte was also able to add to its back line by taking Hamady Diop with the No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. Diop excelled with the Clemson Tigers, and the 20-year-old from Senegal figures to be the lynchpin of this defense for years to come.

Charlotte FC weren’t a pushover in their first season despite being an expansion franchise. The Crown finished 9th in the Eastern Conference table, and they went 3-1-1 in their final five games to close out the season.
Their first goal came in their third match as Adam Armour found the back of the net to nearly earn the team a point on the road against Atlanta United. Unfortunately, they lost that match in the sixth minute of extra time, but they rebounded to secure their first victory the following week. Charlotte FC defeated the New England Revolution 3-1 thanks to a brace from Karol Swiderski, and they followed that up with a 2-0 win over FC Cincinnati in their next game to post their first clean sheet.
