This could be the first year that CF Montreal returns to the playoffs since making a run to the semifinals in 2016. The club signed long-time forward Kei Kamara this offseason, and they also added center back Alistair Johnston from Nashville SC for $1 million in GAM. CF Montreal didn’t lose much either, so there is plenty of chemistry going into the 2022 campaign.

CF Montréal 2022 Preview

It’s been impressive to watch CF Montreal at the start of the season. They are currently sitting in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 6-5-2 record, and Djordje Mihailovic has been an MVP contender with his play. Mihailovic leads the team with seven goals and four assists, and he has been pivotal to everything CF Montreal wants to do on offense. Kei Kamara has proven to have some gas left in the tank too with three goals and two assists. Romell Quioto and Joaquin Torres have been nice fits on offense too, helping make this attack robust.

The issue so far has been the defense. Alistair Johnston has done a lot to help on the attack, but CF Montreal is allowing 1.77 goals per game. Montreal surrendered 14 goals in their first five games, but they have improved and have not allowed more than two goals in a match since that point.

The Montreal Impact existed before the creation of Major League Soccer, they just played in a different league. The Impact joined the American Professional Soccer League in 1992, and they were quickly able to establish themselves as a team to reckon with after winning the league in 1994. They finished with the best regular season record for the next three seasons, but they were unable to repeat as champions in the postseason.

In 2000, Montreal joined the United Soccer League. It took a couple seasons for the Impact to get going in that league, but they eventually started winning in 2003. They finished with the best regular season record for four straight seasons from 2003 to 2006, winning the league in 2004 and again in 2009.

Over time, support for the Impact grew to the point that the Impact started pursuing a route into Major League Soccer. Montreal was awarded an MLS franchise in 2010, and they began playing in the league in 2012. The club has made it to the playoffs three times since it joined the MLS, with its best finish coming in 2016 when Montreal made it to the Eastern Conference Final.

The Impact have had more success in other competitions. Montreal won the Canadian Championship in 2013 and 2014, and then the club made one of the most incredible runs in the brief history of the CONCACAF Champions League. The Impact were able to knock Liga MX giants Pachuca out of the tournament en route to becoming the first Canadian team to ever make it to the Champions League Final. There, they lost to Club America, but it was a shot across the bow to the rest of North America. They changed their name from the Montreal Impact to the more Quebecois friendly CF Montreal in 2021.
