The last four seasons have not been good for the Houston Dynamo. Houston hasn’t placed better than 9th in the Western Conference standings, and the Dynamo finished dead last in the West in back-to-back years. It’s been a sad state of affairs for soccer in the Lone Star State, so fans are hoping that they Dynamo can put it together as the most successful club in Texas. They replaced Maxi Urruti up top with Sebastian Ferreira, but it feels like the club is shuffling deck chairs around on the Titanic.

Houston Dynamo FC 2022 Preview

Contrary to expectations, Houston is in the thick of the playoff picture in the Western Conference a third of the way through the season with a 5-5-3 record. Sebastian Ferreira has been much more successful than Urruti was at the top of the formation with five goals and three assists, and Darwin Quintero has also bagged five goals for the club.

The strength for Houston has been its defense. The Dynamo are allowing 1.08 goals per game as Teenage Hadebe and Tim Parker have been a formidable center back duo.

However, there is reason to believe that the Dynamo are primed for a downturn. They have been awfully fortunate if you look at their xG numbers as Houston has a 0.90 xG For and a 1.51 xG Against.

The Houston Dynamo had one of the best starts you can imagine for a team moving to a new city. Ownership moved the club from San Jose to Houston at the conclusion of the 2005 season in order to find a city willing to build a brand-new soccer-specific stadium. Houston welcomed the club with open arms and was immediately rewarded with the club winning back-to-back MLS Cups right after the move.

However, it wasn’t all roses for the club after the move to Houston. The original name for the Houston franchise was Houston 1836. This was supposed to be a nod to when the city was founded, but that was also the same year that Texas gained its independence from Mexico. Many Houstonians protested the name, and it was quickly decided that the team should be named the Dynamo instead.

In an interesting twist, the Dynamo have only finished on top of the table once during their 16 seasons in the league despite making it to the MLS Cup four times. Additionally, they have the rare distinction of making it to the MLS Cup as both a member of the Western Conference and a member of the Eastern Conference. All four of their MLS Cup Finals appearances occurred in the club’s first seven years.
