2018 College Football Week 5 Betting Odds

With conference play in full swing by Week 5 of the 2018 college football schedule, Stanford steps away from Pac-12 action to continue its rivalry with Notre Dame in one of the premier non-conference games on the slate. Following its showdown with Texas AM last week, Alabama has a patsy in Louisiana-Lafayette before resuming its quest to capture the SEC West. The Tide and Ragin Cajuns played five times in a seven-year stretch from 1984 to 1990 with Bama winning each time. The Cajuns will get a huge payout, but is getting worked by one of the best teams in country worth it?

There are a couple of major Big Ten games on the slate that will impact the division standings. Ohio State and Penn State are expected to compete for the East title and they’ll get together in Happy Valley. Two years ago the Nittany Lions beat OSU and won the Big Ten title, but they were denied a trip to the CFP in favor of Ohio State, hmmm. The teams played a barnburner at the Horseshoe last season with the Buckeyes squeaking out a one-point victory en route to a division title and eventual conference championship. An ACC Coastal tilt between North Carolina and Miami gets the betting week started on Thursday.

2018 NCAA Football Week 5 Betting Schedule

September 25th, 2018 to October 1st, 2018

Thursday, September 27

North Carolina at Miami, 8 p.m. ET (ESPN)

Week five college football action will begin with an interesting Thursday night appetizer from the Atlantic Coast Conference when the Miami Hurricanes host the North Carolina Tar Heels. North Carolina had lost their first two games and then had a cancellation due to a recent hurricane. Head coach Larry Fedora, who was celebrated as a program savior just a couple of years ago, landed on one of the hottest seats in the country. But a thrilling win over Pitt last week may have the Tar Heels back on track. Proof certain comes this week at Miami against a Hurricanes team that has won three in a row after stumbling in their opener. More

Friday, September 28

Memphis at Tulane, 8 p.m. ET (ESPN2)

UCLA at Colorado, 9 p.m. ET (FS1)

Week five offers a Friday Night college football primer that could be one of the most intriguing matchups of the entire weekend. The UCLA Bruins made a huge splash with the hiring of head coach Chip Kelly but so far, the X Box offense that Kelly terrorized opponents with at Oregon is nowhere to be found. Meanwhile the resurgent Colorado Buffaloes are looking like a prime contender in the Pac 12 South Division. Head coach Mike Macintyre was coach of the year two years ago but suffered a big drop in 2017. But so far in 2018 Coach Mac and his Buffs have impressed. The Bruins and Buffs meet Friday night in a key Pac 12 South Division matchup. More

The Georgia Bulldogs are the class of the SEC East and they look to maintain their dominance with a win over the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday. According to coach Kirby Smart, the Dogs didn’t play very well last week, and they still won by two touchdowns, which tells us something about the state of the program. BookMaker live betting offers a number of in-game wagers and props, and based on Georgia’s offensive prowess, leaning towards the Dogs to put up a healthy point total is probably a good idea. More

Week five includes a Big Ten Conference matchup that many believe could be a dangerous trap for the chalk. The Michigan Wolverines have found their form and are flexing their muscles with the look of a national power that they have aspired to be under head coach Jim Harbaugh. The Northwestern Wildcats were highly regarded in the preseason but have stumbled badly after their opening night win at Purdue. But despite their problems the Wildcats are considered a dangerous team that is now backed into a corner. Michigan is at Northwestern Saturday in what may well be one of the top games for all of College Football Saturday. Be sure to have your account ready for live betting on this Big Ten showdown! More

What many college football gamblers and fans would consider to be the top matchup of the weekend takes place Saturday night when the Penn State Nittany Lions host the Ohio State Buckeyes in a Big Ten East Division showdown. Urban Meyer returned as Ohio State head coach last week with a vengeance as the Buckeyes thrashed Tulane at the Horseshoe. Penn State is well known for their “white out” Saturday night home games with frenzied crowds. They are also known as a bona fide top ten team with one of the best quarterbacks in the country. You could make a strong case that no team has a better resume than the Stanford Cardinal through the first four weeks of the 2018 college football betting season. Stanford has wins over USC, San Diego State, and Oregon, and very few teams already have wins over three quality opponents. This week, the Cardinal will take to the road for the second straight time to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Notre Dame is riding high after thrashing Wake Forest on Saturday, and the Irish are looking for another win over a ranked opponent at home. More

Week 5 College Football Games of the Week

Stanford at Notre Dame, Saturday, September 29, 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC)

A rivalry that started at the Rose Bowl in 1925 and has been played annually since 1997 continues in South Bend when the Cardinal and Irish get together. The series has been decidedly in favor of Stanford lately with the Cardinal winning the past three meetings and seven of the last nine. That followed a stretch where the Fighting Irish won seven in a row between 2002 and 2008. All Stanford has done under David Shaw is win, 73 times in fact with five trips to the Pac-12 title game and three championships. He’ll have Heisman candidate Bryce Love to work the offense.

Notre Dame was a win away from reaching the college football playoff in 2015, needing to beat Stanford on the Farm to get in. The Irish entered that game as the No. 4 ranked team in the country, however their dream of competing for a national championship died on the turf at Stanford Stadium in a 38-36 loss, starting the current losing streak. The teams have split the last four meetings in South Bend with the Cardinal pulling out a 17-10 win two years ago.

Ohio State at Penn State, Saturday, September 29

The Buckeyes won’t have to contend with Saquon Barkley, but they will have 100,000 fans breathing down their necks in Happy Valley. This game sets the tone for the Big Ten East with both clubs fixtures at the top of the standings. Penn State handed OSU a rare conference loss two seasons ago and used that to win the division and the conference championship. Yet the Nittany Lions were passed over for the CFP in favor of Ohio State.

Exacting some revenge for that loss in 2016, the Buckeyes pulled out a narrow 39-38 win last season to win the East by a game over PSU and Michigan. There are more battles over the course of the season, but the winner of this matchup gets a head start on the rest of the field in what is sure to be an exciting race in the Big Ten East.
