The Mustangs won the conference title in their last season before departing for the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Michael Pratt passed for 238 yards, but Makhi Hughes, the AAC's leading rusher who rushed for at least 100 yards in seven of his last eight games entering Saturday, managed just 44 yards on 11 carries for the Green Wave, who had won 10 straight games. Tulane failed to repeat as AAC champion and likely lost its opportunity to play in a New Year's Six bowl for the second consecutive season.

Tulane was 0-for-7 on third downs before Pratt threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Yulkeith Brown on third-and-1 to tie the score at 14 midway through the third quarter.

As hard as it may be to believe, the Tulane Green Wave was a member of the SEC. And from 1936 through 1950, they had some success with four top-20 finishes. But by 1965, it became obvious that this esteemed and comparatively small private school in New Orleans could not compete with football factory programs like Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, and Tennessee Volunteers. So Tulane went the independent route beginning in 1966.

After dropping out of the SEC, Tulane became a stepping-stone type of program. Coaches like Larry Smith, Mack Brown, and Tommy Bowden would parlay a big season at Tulane into a bigger job at a more prominent program.

From 1940 through 2017, Tulane went to eight bowl games. And there were times when the program’s legitimacy was questioned. But then came Willie Fritz.

Willie Fritz has led Tulane to bowl games in four of the last five seasons. And in 2022, Fritz took Tulane to the Cotton Bowl, where the Green Wave scored an epic upset win over the USC Trojans.

Indeed, these are the glory days of Tulane Green Wave football.
