Alliance of American Football
Many have tried without success, but that doesn’t keep others from trying. Football is the most popular sport in America and the new Alliance of American Football is the latest attempt to feed the massive appetite for the game to the masses.
The NFL has long had a monopoly, but the behemoth is quiet during the spring, and unlike other leagues, the AAF is not competing with the NFL, which would be suicide. Rather, the new league is working with the old guard, experimenting with new rules and giving players a chance to put game action on tape.
The inaugural season of the AAF consists of eight teams divided equally into the Eastern Conference and Western.
The four teams in the East are the Atlanta Legends, Birmingham Iron, Memphis Express and Orlando Apollos.
Teams in the West include the Arizona Hotshots, Salt Lake Stallions, San Antonio Commanders and San Diego Fleet.
AAF Week 8 Betting Preview
Let there be football. At least for one more weekend, anyway. The Alliance of American Football could possibly fold by Monday as recent lead investor Tom Dundon has found out that the hundreds of millions of dollars he invested a few weeks ago to keep the Alliance afloat has turned into raw red ink. Dundon said that without NFL players being sent to develop in the AAF that it was unlikely the league could survive. TV ratings have dropped and most games have fans dressed as empty seats. But for Week 8 there will indeed be pro football action. Steve Spurrier’s Orlando Apollos team continues to dominate as the Eastern Conference while the San Antonio Commanders lead the West. This weekend the AAF is saving the best for last with the Arizona Hotshots at the San Antonio commanders in a key showdown in the West for Sunday night to end the weekend, and perhaps the Alliance itself. The coaches in the AAF are more well-known than the players with all but two having previous head coaching experience in the NFL, NCAA or other professional leagues. Orlando’s Steve Spurrier is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach. He won a national championship at Florida and also coached in the NFL and USFL.
Dennis Erickson won a pair of national championship while at Miami and has had an illustrious career. San Diego’s Mike Martz was the offensive coordinator and later head coach of the St. Louis Rams during their glory days.
Fans of the NFL will have to get used to several rules differences, the biggest being in the kicking game. There are no extra point kicks just two-point conversion attempts after a touchdown. And there are no kickoffs. Possessions will start on a team's own 25-yard line.
Defenses are not allowed to rush more than five players, and no defensive player can cross the line of scrimmage from more than two yards outside the offensive tackles. Such a violation will result in a 15-yard penalty.
Each team will play a 10-game regular season with home and away games against each conference member and a single game against each team from the other conference (two home; two away). Weeks 2, 4, 6 and 9 are designated as non-conference game weeks.
The regular season concludes on April 14 with the top two teams from each conference advancing to the playoffs. The first-place team will host the second-place team with the conference winners playing in the first AAF Championship game on April 27, 2019 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.
