Professional outdoor football is back in Utah’s capital with the announcement of the Salt Lake Stallions as one of eight charter members in the new Alliance of American Football. The announcement was made on May 14, 2018. The Stallions are part of the Western Conference along with San Antonio, San Diego and Arizona and will play their home games at Rice-Eccles Stadium on the University of Utah campus.

The name Stallions honors the spirit of the region and the presence of horsepower, which inspired the setting and breaking of land speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats, located just west of Salt Lake City. Team colors of sky blue, royal blue and silver are also representative of geographical landmarks in the area like the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountain range.

A few days after the team announcement, Dennis Erickson was introduced as the first head coach of the Stallions. Under his direction the Miami Hurricanes won a pair of national championships in 1989 and 1991. Erickson compiled a 179-96-1 record as a collegiate head coach. He also had stints in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers, going 40-56 in six seasons.

Erickson was coaxed out of retirement the first time by Kyle Whittingham in 2013 to join the staff at Utah as co-offensive coordinator. He retired after four seasons and 47 years of coaching, only to be pulled back into the lifestyle by the lure of the AAF.

Teams in the new league are made up largely of local college players looking to keep the dream alive. The Stallions’ territorial list of colleges includes: Cal, Oregon, Utah, Oklahoma State, Utah State, Boise State, BYU, Wyoming, Air Force, Southern Utah, Weber State, Colorado State, Northern Colorado, Idaho, Idaho State and Dixie State. There are affiliations with the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers in the NFL and the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL.

Professional outdoor football has been scarce in Salt Lake City. The Utah Pioneers were an original member of the Professional Spring Football League, which was slated to begin play in early 1992. However, just days before the season opener, the league folded. The city also hosted the Arena Football League’s Utah Blaze.

Sitting on the University of Utah campus, 45,807-seat Rice-Eccles Stadium will serve as the home venue for the Stallions. In 1997 the facility was completely rebuilt in order to host the 2002 Winter Olympics’ opening and closing ceremonies. A generous donation from the Eccles Foundation aided in the process. The Utah Utes have played football in a stadium at the site since 1927. Rice-Eccles was the home of MLS’s Real Salt Lake from 2005 to 2008 and has hosted a number of other events.

The Stallions played the first game in franchise history on February 10, 2019, losing 38-22 to Arizona at Sun Devil Stadium. A 1-yard Matt Asiata run in the second quarter was the team’s first touchdown. The first victory came in the first home game when the Stallions defeated the same Arizona team, 23-15, before an announced crowd of 10,412.
