AAF Betting

The South loves them some football, and the Alliance of American Football is counting on that to help carry the Atlanta Legends. One of eight charter members of the new league, the Legends are one of two teams, along with the Arizona Hotshots, based in a city that houses a NFL franchise. It’s a good thing the AAF isn’t competing against the established league because it likely wouldn’t survive in this market.

The team name was inspired by the many heroes who emerged from the city and from the South in general. Famous athletes like Hank Aaron, Herschel Walker and Bobby Jones, along with civil rights leader Martin Luther King are just a few. The purple, gold and white color scheme used for the team uniforms was designed to symbolize royalty.

There are always snafus when starting a new venture and the AAF is no different. The Legends, in particular, have dealt with their share of adversity even before taking the field. When the team was announced as the second franchise in the new league, former Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress was introduced along with Michael Vick, who was slotted to be the team’s offensive coordinator.

However, just a month before the season was to start, Childress abruptly resigned. The team turned to defensive coordinator Charlie Coyle to take the reins. In addition, two days before the inaugural contest, it was announced that Vick would be unable to perform his duties. Rich Bartel took over only to resign from his new post on Feb. 22, two days before the team’s home opener.

The team turned to Ken Zampese to run the offense and the Legends produced 454 yards in their first game under the veteran NFL offensive coordinator, also getting the first win in franchise history, 14-11 over Arizona.

Coyle is one of two head coaches in the AAF that had no previous experience in the position, though he is no stranger to coaching football. With nearly four decades as an assistant with various college and NFL programs, Coyle finally got the chance to run his own show.

Each AAF team controls the rights to players from different college programs that are located nearby to help stock their rosters. For Atlanta the schools include: Georgia, Clemson, Louisville, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Savannah State, Albany State, Clark-Atlanta, Fort Valley State, Morehouse, Shorter, Valdosta State and West Georgia. Atlanta’s NFL affiliates are the Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons and Washington Redskins. The Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts are also a feeder franchise.

The Legends play their home games at Georgia State Stadium, which is actually the former Turner Field baseball park that housed MLB’s Atlanta Braves for two decades. Georgia State purchased the land and converted the old park into a 24,000-seat football venue for its program.

Playing their first home game in Week 3 of the 2019 season, the Legends fell to Birmingham 28-12 in front of an announced crowd of 10,717. The first game in franchise history took place on February 9, 2019, a 40-6 loss to the Orlando Apollos. Atlanta’s first ever victory came in Arizona on March 3 when former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray threw for 254 yards.
