AAF Betting

The San Antonio Commanders were introduced as one of eight charter members of the Alliance of American Football on June 21, 2018. The franchise also named former San Diego Chargers coach Mike Riley as the first head coach in its history with former Dallas Cowboys fullback Daryl Johnston the GM.

The Commanders are part of the four-team Western Conference along with teams based in San Diego, Calif., Phoenix, Ariz., and Salt Lake City, Utah. Home games will be played at the 64,000-seat Alamodome, which is located in downtown San Antonio.

Sticking with the theme of a team name that identifies with the city, Commanders is a tribute to San Antonio’s military history. The color scheme also plays a role in the city’s history. Maroon is a color common to San Antonio and it’s used in the city’s official logo. Silver is in reference to military swords carried by officers, and red is a part of the Texas state flag. An image of the Alamo is featured on the back of team helmets.

Riley’s second stint as a head coach took place in San Antonio guiding the World League of American Football’s Riders for two seasons. He posted a 7-3 record in 1992, which turned out to be the teams last. Riley was at Oregon State two different times and became the program’s leader in coaching victories. He spent three years with the Chargers in between his Corvallis time, posting a 14-34 record.

After winning 85 games and six bowls during his second go-round with the Beavers, Riley was hired by Nebraska. In three years the Huskers went 19-19 and 12-14 in the Big Ten. He was fired following the 2017 season after winning just four games.

Teams in the AAF are made up largely of local college players who are looking to continue their career. Given San Antonio’s territorial list of schools, it shouldn’t lack talent. The Commanders’ college list includes: Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Baylor, Rice, Houston, SMU, TCU, North Texas, UTSA, Texas State, Abilene Christian, Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Prairie View, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas Southern, Angelo State, Midwestern State, Tarleton State, Texas A&M-Commerce, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas-Permian Basin and West Texas A&M. NFL affiliations are with the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, and the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Alamodome has seen plenty during its time. The venue housed the NBA’s Spurs for nine seasons and hosted the NFL’s New Orleans Saints when the team was displaced due to Hurricane Katrina. The CFL’s Texans played the 1995 season in the downtown arena and there have been four Final Fours.

The inaugural AAF game between the Commanders and San Diego Fleet was played in front of 27,857 inside the Alamodome on February 9, 2019. The home team prevailed 15-6. The Commanders set an AAF attendance record by attracting 29,176 fans in their Week 2 loss to Orlando.
