This is an unfamiliar position for the Seattle Sounders and their fans. After 13 years of incredible success, the Sounders had their worst season in club history in 2022. They not only finished outside the top four of the Western Conference for the first time, they also missed out on the postseason for the first time too. Still, Seattle is considered one of the mid-tier favorites to win the MLS Cup coming into the 2023 season, as the Sounders shouldn’t be as injury prone as they were during the 2022 campaign.

Seattle Sounders FC 2023 Preview
If the Seattle Sounders stay healthy, they should be one of the top teams in the Western Conference once again in 2023. Seattle essentially decided to run it back and didn’t make many moves in the offseason, but the Sounders did add Heber to help Raul Ruidiaz up top. Ruidiaz netted 59 goals for the Sounders over the last five seasons, but he will turn 33 in July and has been dealing with injuries over the last few years.
Designated players Joao Paulo, Albert Rusnak, and captain Nicolas Lodeiro patrol the midfield. Rusnak just joined the club last year from Real Salt Lake, and he should be much better in his second season with the Sounders. Lodeiro is still the key to it all for the team with 40 goals and 70 assists in 158 games over the last seven seasons.

The Seattle Sounders have been incredible since they first entered the MLS in 2009. Seattle had never finished worse than fourth in the Western Conference, making the playoffs in each of their first 13 seasons before finishing 11th in the Western Conference during a bad 2022 campaign.
Seattle wasted no time adding silverware to its mantle. The club won the US Open Cup in each of its first three seasons, and the Sounders tied the Chicago Fire and Sporting Kansas City for the most US Open Cup titles in the MLS era with their fourth title in 2014. They nearly tied older teams like Maccabi Los Angeles and the Bethlehem Steel with five titles, but they fell in the 2012 US Open Cup Final.
That success in the US Open Cup didn’t translate to success in the MLS playoffs until 2016. Seattle failed to advance to the MLS Cup Finals in any of its first seven seasons, but the Sounders finally broke through the glass ceiling in 2016. They claimed their first MLS Cup title on the road against Toronto FC, beating the Reds in penalties after a scoreless regulation and extra time, and that started a rivalry between these two clubs.
The Sounders fell to Toronto FC in the MLS Cup rematch in 2017, and the two clubs met in the finals for the third time in four years in 2019. After a scoreless first half, Seattle dominated in the second half with three goals to claim its second MLS Cup. They made it to their fourth MLS Cup Finals in five years in 2020, but they were hammered 3-0 by the Columbus Crew.
