It looked like the Portland Timbers would qualify for the postseason for the sixth straight year in 2022. Portland simply needed to pick up a point in either of its last two matches, but the Timbers lost at home to Los Angeles FC in the penultimate game of the regular season thanks to an LAFC goal in the fifth minute of extra time. Then, Real Salt Lake hammered the Timbers in the season finale to keep Portland out of the playoffs for the first time since 2016. They will look to change that this season with the addition of Brazilian midfielder Evander as a DP.

The Timbers broke the bank to acquire Evander, setting a new club record after bringing him in from Danish club FC Midtjylland. They immediately inked him to a four-year contract, and he was shining in the Europa League at the time of his signing. Evander netted 50 goals and added 38 assists in his four-plus years at Midtjylland, and the good news for Portland is that players from this club tend to do well in the MLS.
Portland also signed Eric Miller from Nashville and Franck Boli from Hungary, and the club lost Bill Tuiloma and Josecarlos Van Rankin. However, this team returns more players from last year’s squad than any other team in the league, and that continuity could be huge.

The Pacific Northwest is a hotbed for soccer, and after the success of the Seattle Sounders, it was obvious that Major League Soccer was going to put another team in the region. The Portland Timbers were awarded an expansion franchise in 2009, becoming the second major professional team in the city. Since their founding, they have captured the hearts of the city and are one of the most fervently supported teams in the MLS.
Portland sold out every single home game from 2011 to mid-2021, and the fans got to watch a lot of quality soccer at Providence Park. The Timbers finished atop the Western Conference in 2013 and 2017, and they won the 2015 MLS Cup with a 2-1 victory on the road against the Columbus Crew. They have been to the MLS Cup two other times, but they fell in the finals to Atlanta United in 2018 and lost a heartbreaker to New York City FC in 2021. Felipe Mora scored in the fourth minute of extra time to send the match to overtime, but the Timbers lost in penalties.
The Timbers also claimed the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament during the COVID shortened 2020 season.
