Of the clubs currently in Serie A, Sampdoria are one of the newer teams. They weren’t founded until after World War II when two clubs based in Genoa merged to form Sampdoria. Just because they are relatively new, doesn’t mean they have been a pushover though, and they have been a mainstay in Serie A.

Sampdoria have largely been a mid-table team during their time in Serie A, but they have occasionally challenged the best. They had a number of top half of the table finishes in the 1950s and early 1960s, but their best run was a 20-year period from the early 1980s to the early 2000s. During that period, Sampdoria claimed all their hardware, winning their one Serie A title during the 1990-91 season and four Coppa Italia titles from 1985 to 1994.

Sampdoria have largely been a middle-of-the-pack club during this decade, but they did contend for the league title in 2010 and finished well enough in 2015 to qualify for the following year’s Europa League.

Over the summer, Sampdoria lost one of their key players. Arsenal shelled out 30 million Euros to acquire Lucas Torreira, and not having their sensational young midfielder is sure to sting. Sampdoria were able to acquire some other talented players though, landing Duvan Zapata, Omar Colley, and Ronaldo Vieira. They would be happy with another mid-table finish this year.
