UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals

The first legs of the quarterfinal will be played on Tuesday, April 6 and Wednesday, April 7. The second legs will be played on Tuesday, April 13 and Wednesday, April 14.

Tuesday, April 6

Leg 1: Manchester City 2, Borussia Dortmund 1

Borussia Dortmund nearly picked up a crucial road draw against Manchester City thanks to a late goal from Marco Reus. However, Phil Foden scored for City in the 90th minute to ensure the Germans need a win in the return leg in order to advance to the semifinals.

Leg 1: Real Madrid 3, Liverpool 1

Real Madrid took care of business in the first leg against Liverpool with an impressive 3-1 win despite playing with a decimated back line. Los Blancos won despite not having Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, or Dani Carvajal, and that puts Real Madrid in great position heading into the second leg at Anfield.

Wednesday, April 7

Leg 1: Bayern Munich 2, PSG 3

The defending champions suffered an unlucky loss to PSG at home in the first leg. Although Bayern Munich had an absurd xG of 4.28 compared to 1.65 for PSG, the German giants lost 3-2 as Kylian Mbappe notched a brace for the French monolith. PSG have been trying to slay their demons in this competition for the past decade, so they must stay sharp against Bayern Munich in Paris.

Leg 1: Porto 0, Chelsea 2

Porto were unlucky on the night against Chelsea too with a slight edge in terms of xG. However, Chelsea emerged with a 2-0 road win in Portugal to put themselves in prime position to advance to the semifinals. This match had to be played in Spain due to Portugal’s COVID restrictions.

Tuesday, April 13

Leg 2: PSG vs. Bayern Munich, 3 p.m. ET

Leg 2: Chelsea vs. Porto, 3 p.m. ET

Wednesday, April 14

Leg 2: Borussia Dortmund vs. Manchester City, 3 p.m. ET

Leg 2: Liverpool vs. Real Madrid, 3 p.m. ET

UEFA Champions League History

Haves and the have-nots, so it’s not hard to do this and not get punished. However, the Champions League is where the best of the best in European football play, and you have to constantly be on your ‘A’ game or else you might be eliminated from the tournament.

Real Madrid is the most decorated team in the history of the Champions League. The Spanish giants have had two major runs of glory, winning five straight Champions League titles between 1956 and 1960, and four out of five titles between 2014 and 2018. Their 13 championships are more than the number of titles that the second- and third-place teams have combined, and that is a testament to their dominance. Milan has the second-most Champions League titles with seven, followed by Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Barcelona, who have each won five championships.

The country that has been home to the most Champions League winners is Spain. Real Madrid and Barcelona are the only two clubs from Spain to have won it all, and their vast success has led to 18 title winners coming from Spain. Italy and England are tied with the second-most winners at 13 apiece, but Italy has an abundance of teams that fell just short in the final. There have been 16 Italian teams that have finished runners-up compared to just 8 English teams.

Germany has produced the fourth-most Champions League winners (7), but the next two countries on the list might be a bit of a surprise. You would think France would round out the list because Ligue 1 is considered one of the top five leagues on the continent. However, France has only given us one Champions League winner. Instead, the Netherlands (6) and Portugal (4) are the only other countries with more than one winning team.
