2019 Frisco Bowl - Utah State Aggies vs Kent State Golden Flashes

Frisco Bowl Betting

The youngest game on the 2019-20 bowl slate takes place on the first day of postseason action when the Mountain West Conference Utah State Aggies take on the Mid-American Conference Kent State Golden Flashes on December 20 in the Frisco Bowl, kicking off bowl season. Formerly known as the Miami Beach Bowl, it’s found a new home in Frisco thanks to ESPN Events, which purchased the bowl and relocated it. Playing their eighth bowl game in nine seasons, the Aggies opened as an 8-point favorite.

Frisco Bowl Preview

It’s been a nice run for Utah State, which played in just two bowls from 1962 until their run of five straight postseason tilts started in 2012. That streak was interrupted in 2016 but started again the following season. Their 52-13 win over North Texas in the 2018 New Mexico Bowl stopped a two-game bowl slide giving them a 4-2 record in their last six bowl appearances. There were hopes of a better bowl matchup for the faithful in Logan, but it didn’t turn out that way. The Aggies needed wins in three of their last four to go 7-5 and become eligible.

Despite his announcement to enter the NFL draft, Jordan Love will play in the Frisco Bowl. A prospect for the next level, Love had a down year statistically from 2018 and the Aggies suffered. Love capped an 11-win 2018 by throwing for 359 yards and four touchdowns in the bowl win over North Texas. The numbers declined this season and so did Utah State’s win total. Love had fewer yards and touchdowns while throwing 10 more picks. The Aggies finished 7-5 SU and ATS.

The Golden Flashes enter their first bowl game since 2012 and just the third in program history on a roll after winning three straight to even their record and become bowl eligible. They are the only team to reach bowl eligibility by winning their last three contests. There isn’t a lot of postseason history associated with the team since its first bowl game came after the 1972 season, and at 6-6 they had their first non-losing regular season since a record 11 wins in 2012.

Dual threat Dustin Crum leads the offense against an Aggies team that wasn’t very good defending. Crum threw for 2,333 yards with 18 touchdowns and added a team-high 560 yards and five scores on the ground. Half of Kent’s losses were to good Power 5 teams Arizona State, Auburn and Wisconsin, so they won’t be nervous about playing in a bowl game.

Frisco Bowl Format

The Frisco Bowl was created in 2017 after this postseason game was relocated from Miami Beach after three years due to poor support. The game has an affiliation with the American Athletic Conference, but we haven’t had an AAC club participate since the inaugural 2017 edition when SMU was thumped by Louisiana Tech. The host venue Toyota Stadium serves as home of Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas and has a seating capacity of 20,500.

Frisco Bowl Game Results

SEASON WINNING TEAM LOSING TEAM SCORE
2018 Ohio San Diego State 27-0
2017 Louisiana Tech SMU 51-10

J’Mar Smith threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score to earn MVP honors as the Bulldogs walloped SMU 51-10 in the very first Frisco Bowl in 2017. The Mustangs fumbled on their first offensive play and turned the ball over six times for new coach Sonny Dykes, who was hired a little over a week before the game, replacing Chad Morris, who resigned to take over the Arkansas program.

The Ohio Bobcats pitched an impressive shutout last time, keeping San Diego State at bay in a 27-0 victory. It was the first shutout in the bowl’s history, either in Texas or Florida.

Before it became the Frisco Bowl, this postseason contest was played in Miami. Tulsa dominated Central Michigan, 55-10, in the final Miami Beach Bowl in 2016, scoring 48 points in the first three quarters and cruising to the win. Tulsa quarterback Dane Evans was named the MVP of the contest.

In 2015, Western Kentucky used a huge third quarter to rally past South Florida for the 45-35 win. The Hilltoppers trailed at halftime but scored 28 points in the third quarter to take the lead and held on for the win. The MVP of this game was Western Kentucky quarterback Brandon Doughty.

In the first Miami Beach Bowl, Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch led his team to a wild 55-48 win over BYU. The Tigers led by 10 points late in the third quarter, but the Cougars rallied to force overtime and it took a pair of extra stanzas to decide it. Lynch was named the MVP of the game.

Most All-Time Wins at Frisco Bowl

WINS TEAM YEARS WON
1 Ohio 2018
1 Louisiana Tech 2017

There wasn’t much history at the Miami Beach Bowl with just three games played. And there is less history with the Frisco Bowl, though one of the newest additions to the bowl lineup will look to create some of its own. As long as the American has an affiliation, teams from that league should start dotting the all-time wins list. As of now, Louisiana Tech and Ohio have the early advantage with Frisco Bowl victories. We also have the potential to see quality matchups between Group of Five conferences starving to get national attention. Only time will tell how the Frisco Bowl plays out in the coming years.
