In two years, coach Jeff Haffley has changed the narrative at Boston College. Despite the fact that his record hardly differs from his predecessor Steve Addazio. But the team record is the only similarity between the two. Addazio departed with the full wrath of his players. Many of whom trashed him on Twitter. It was an ugly ending to a mediocre reign of minor bowl berths and little upward movement. Counter to that is Haffley’s youthful enthusiasm. Players love Haffley and fight hard for him on the field. And the pro-sports-crazed Boston market is taking notice.

Weekly Matchup

On Monday, December 27, 2021, the Boston College Eagles will face the East Carolina Pirates in the Military Bowl hosted by Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. Kickoff time is set for 2:30 p.m. ET with television coverage on ESPN.

On this occasion, Boston College is the more recognizable brand. Squares will fock to bet on the name that they know. However, Wise Guys aren’t so easy. Of great concern is the popgun Boston College offense. Further, studied handicappers like that East Carolina was a strong and profitable betting value in 2021. Sharps know that the Pirates will get enhanced points based on branding. And that East Carolina is good enough to cover if not win the game outright.

Last game, East Carolina was routed by Cincinnati 35-13 as 14.5-point home dogs. The game went under the total of 56. As a result, East Carolina is 7-5 straight up, 7-4-1 against the spread, and 4-8 over/under. Overall, East Carolina ranks 38th for total offense and 56th for scoring offense. Defensively, the Pirates rank 80th overall and 67th for points allowed.

East Carolina has gotten the money in six of their previous eight games. Also, the Pirates have gone under the total in five of their most recent seven outings. East Carolina is 1-4 against the spread vs. the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Late on, Boston College has covered only two of their last seven games. The Eagles have gone under the total in seven of their most recent eight games. In December, the Eagles are 5-0 over the total.

Previous Game Recap

Last game Boston College lost to Wake Forest 41-10 as 6-point home dogs. The Demon Deacons and Eagles game went under the total of 64.5. Overall, Boston College has a record of 6-6 straight up, 6-6 against the spread, and 3-9 over/under. Overall, the Eagles rank 103rd for total offense and 94th for scoring offense. While defensively, BC ranks 35th overall and 34th for points allowed.

Boston College’s record is not all that impressive. Of great concern was that quarterback Phil Jurkovec missed half the season. Thus, the offense struggled to move the ball. The games that Jurkovec missed were hardly watchable. And a season-ending 41-10 loss to Wake Forest did not conclude the season the way Haffley wanted.

Haffley’s biggest accomplishment is restoring faith and interest in the BC program. Consider that Addazio left behind a program that was demoralized and underperforming. And a program that generated no interest in the saturated sports market of Boston.

Now the quest is for a quality recruiting class. Haffley is armed with a contract extension and a no longer hemorrhaging program. He has something to sell to prospective recruits.

As mentioned earlier, East Carolina is in better form. Also, the Pirates have provided far greater wagering value this season. Boston College is a dicey proposition as a low-scoring favorite.

September 25 brings a tricky home game against the Missouri Tigers. Mizzou is one of the most improved teams in the SEC and is led by a Hafley-like dynamic young coach in Eli Drinkwitz.

On October 2, Boston College will get a good measurement of their progress with a game at Clemson. Death Valley is just that for visitors, but Hafley won't let his team blink.

The Florida State Seminoles will visit Boston College on November 20 and will not like the cold weather on Chestnut Hill. The home finale against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on November 27 should carry serious bowl implications.
