2020 Montgomery Bowl
The Montgomery Bowl will be a matchup between the Memphis Tigers and Florida Atlantic Owls on Wednesday, December 23 in Montgomery, Alabama on ESPN. The Montgomery Bowl will be making its debut and it is only expected to be played this year, as it is a replacement for the Fenway Bowl. There will be fans in attendance, but due to COVID-19 the number of fans will be limited. Memphis comes into the game with a record of 7-3 having finished in third place in the American Athletic Conference, while Florida Atlantic finished the regular season at 5-3 and in second place in the East Division of Conference USA.

Montgomery Bowl Preview
Memphis will be playing in a bowl game for the seventh straight season as they take on Florida Atlantic in the inaugural Montgomery Bowl. "It's great for us to be able to represent the University of Memphis and our city in the first-ever Montgomery Bowl," Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield said to the media, "It's a special opportunity to be able to compete at the highest level in a historic, wonderful city."
Memphis comes into this game at 7-3 overall and 5-3 in the American Athletic Conference. The Tigers were just 3-7 ATS this season. They rank in the Top 25 in the country in total yards per game and passing yards per game. Senior quarterback Brady White ranks in the Top 10 in the country in touchdown passes (28), passing yards (3,096), passing yards per game (309.6) and total offense (317.2). Memphis averaged 31.6 points per game this season, while giving up 29.7 points per contest. Memphis has wins this season against Arkansas State, UCF, Temple, USF, Stephen F. Austin, Navy and Houston. Their losses came to SMU, Cincinnati and Tulane. Memphis will be making its 14th all-time bowl appearance and they have a record of 5-8. The Tigers have not won a bowl game since 2014.
FAU went 5-3 in its first season under coach Willie Taggart including 4-2 in Conference USA. The Owls were just 3-5 ATS this season with five of their eight games going under the total. Florida Atlantic has wins this season against Charlotte, UTSA, Western Kentucky, Florida International and Massachusetts. Their losses came against Marshall, Georgia Southern and Southern Mississippi.
The Owls are led by a defense that gave up just 16.5 points per game, 9th best in the country. Senior linebacker Leighton McCarthy is second in the nation with nine sacks. Florida Atlantic averaged just 20 points per game and that was 111th in the nation. FAU will be making their fifth bowl appearance and they are unbeaten at 4-0.
Head coach Willie Taggart has a career record of 61-65. He previously coached at Western Kentucky, South Florida, Oregon and Florida State. He has led his previous teams to five times, but this will only be his second one as head coach as he was hired to other jobs before his teams played in their bowl games. His only other bowl game as head coach was a loss by USF to Western Kentucky in the Miami Beach Bowl in 2015.
These teams met in the 2007 New Orleans Bowl with the Owls winning 44-27.
