Orlando Magic NBA Championship Betting Odds
The last two years have not been good for the Orlando Magic. They have won just over 20 games in each of the last two seasons, and it’s now been 12 years since this franchise last won a playoff series. However, all of those lottery picks might finally be starting to change the course of the franchise. Orlando won the lottery and had the No. 1 overall pick in this summer’s draft, and the Magic took Paolo Banchero from Duke. The Magic have had a ton of success with the No. 1 overall pick, previously taking Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, and Dwight Howard in this slot, so there are high hopes for Banchero.

Paolo Banchero was considered the least likely No. 1 overall pick a few weeks before the NBA Draft. Pundits liked Chet Holmgren or Jabari Smith to be the top pick, but there was a flurry of action on Banchero shortly before the draft. He is expected to stretch the floor as a power forward, and his three-point shooting should be able to help out his teammates.
Banchero will be in the front court with Franz Wagner and Wendell Carter. Wagner was the No. 8 overall pick last year, and he was one of the top performing rookies. The Michigan product was the second-leading scorer on the Magic with 15.2 PPG, and he made almost 47% of his field goals.
Orlando acquired Carter from Chicago in exchange for Nikola Vucevic. Carter averaged a double-double as the starting center for the Magic last year, posting 15.2 PPG and 10.5 RPG. The Magic have other bigs that can provide depth too in Jonathan Isaac (if he can stay healthy), Mo Bamba, and Moe Wagner.
Cole Anthony was the leading scorer for the Magic last season, averaging 16.3 PPG. Anthony wasn’t that efficient though, and the Magic are really hoping that Gonzaga’s Jalen Suggs can start to develop in his second year. Suggs was selected with the No. 5 pick last year, but he wasn’t too effective and has been dealing with a foot injury over the summer. Former No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz could have an impact too, especially if Suggs is hurt.

The Orlando Magic have not been as successful as their fellow Florida expansion team, the Miami Heat. Orlando has only had spurts of relevancy, but the Magic have had some of the most exciting players in the NBA at one time or another.
Orlando had its first superstar in 1992. The Magic selected Shaquille O’Neal with the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft, and O’Neal led the Magic to the NBA Finals alongside Penny Hardaway in just his third season in the league. However, Orlando failed to win a game against the Houston Rockets, and O’Neal left for Los Angeles a few years later.
The Magic had Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill on the roster in the early 2000s, and it looked like they could become title contenders with those two stars. However, Hill suffered multiple injuries, and only played in 200 games during his seven years with the Magic.
Stan Van Gundy helped lead the Magic to the 2009 NBA Finals the last time that Orlando was relevant. Dwight Howard was the star of a team that also had solid players like Rashard Lewis, Hedo Turkoglu, and Jameer Nelson, but Orlando was only able to win a single game off the Los Angeles Lakers. Howard followed in Shaq’s footsteps and left for LA a few years later.
