Los Angeles Lakers 2025-26 NBA Betting Lines
It was a relatively mixed bag summer for the Los Angeles Lakers' offseason moves. Perhaps the most important move made was the impending sale of the team from the Buss family to Mark Walter, who holds a minority stake in the team already and is the CEO of TWG Global, owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and other sports properties. 2024-25 was a tale of two seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers. The first part was the Lakers without Luka Doncic. Los Angeles was mired in mediocrity and red ink. Fans and gamblers were tuning out, and a move needed to be made. Halfway through the season, the Lakers acquired Doncic in a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Mavericks. Once Doncic arrived, the Lakers became one of the top teams in the NBA and gained the #3 seed in the Western Conference for the 2025 NBA Playoffs.

Team Overview
The Los Angeles Lakers' final regular season record was 50-32 straight up, 45-35-2 against the spread, and 41-41 over/under the total. Los Angeles was third in the Western Conference playoff standings, 18 games behind the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Los Angeles's NBA metrics were 17th for scoring offense, 9th for field goal percentage, 14th for 3-point field goal percentage, 13th for free throw percentage, and 26th for offensive rebounding. On defense, the Lakers' metrics were 11th for scoring defense, 10th for field goal percentage permitted, 10th for 3-point field goal percentage allowed, and 10th for defensive rebounding.
But in the end, the Lakers were exposed as not being serious championship contenders. The Minnesota Timberwolves eliminated the Lakers 4-1 in the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs.

Off-Season Moves for 2025-26
Key additions: Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, Jake LaRavia
Key subtractions: Dorian Finney-Smith, Jordan Goodwin, Shake Milton
The Lakers lost Dorian Finney-Smith, one of the best 3-and-D wings on the market, to the Rockets — not great for a team that requires defense-first role players around Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves.
They instead signed Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart and Jake LaRavia, a nice haul for around the same amount of money that Finney-Smith received. Ayton, of course, is a 26-year-old former No. 1 overall pick, Smart is a one-time Defensive Player of the Year, and LaRavia shot 42.3% from 3-point range last year. None of their previous teams wanted to keep them, which should raise some red flags for Lakers fans.
Meanwhile, the Lakers' offseason did not seem to impress James, who issued a contentious statement upon opting into the final year of his contract with the team. That led to rumors about his availability in either a trade or buyout, none of which seems imminent, and all of which seems like a major distraction.
The Lakers are an interesting contrast to their crosstown rivals' offseason. Building around 26-year-old Doncic, the Lakers added LaRavia, 23, the youngest unrestricted free agent to change teams for more than the minimum, plus Ayton, who recently turned 27. Smart, 31, is the Lakers' oldest newcomer. The Lakers' additions weren't as effective last season as the Clippers', but the new Lakers stand a better chance of being long-term contributors.
The biggest question about the Lakers' offseason is what that approach means for 40-year-old superstar LeBron James. However, James has little leverage after exercising his player option. It's more important for the Lakers to persuade Doncic to sign an extension when he becomes eligible this weekend.
Key Players
F LeBron James is a four-time NBA champion, four-time NBA Finals MVP, four-time NBA MVP, and 21-time NBA All-Star, including this past year. In 2025, James averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per contest.
PG Luka Doncic is a 5-time NBA All-Star. He has averaged over 30 points per game in two of the past three seasons and in three of his four playoff campaigns for Dallas. This past season, Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game.
Head Coach
JJ Redick had a decent debut as the rookie head coach in 2024-25. Previously, Redick hosted a podcast and served as an ESPN NBA analyst. Redick had a better-than-expected first season, leading the Lakers to their best record since 2020.

Los Angeles Lakers History
Most people know that the Los Angeles Lakers were one of the first NBA franchises and started as the Minneapolis Lakers. However, they don’t know that the Minneapolis Lakers purchased the franchise spot of the short-lived Detroit Gems of the NBL. The Detroit Gems went 4-40 in their lone season, so the new ownership group brought in a new roster when they moved to the Twin Cities. There, the NBA’s first dynasty was born.
George Mikan became the NBA’s first superstar when he joined the Minneapolis Lakers as a rookie in 1948. Although he played only seven seasons of professional basketball, he was unstoppable in the paint and helped the Lakers win five NBA titles in their first six years.
The Lakers moved to Los Angeles in 1960. They were a star-crossed team for over a decade, making it to the NBA Finals eight times, but they lost all eight of those trips. Seven losses came to the Boston Celtics as Bill Russell and company routinely got the better of Jerry West and Elgin Baylor.
This franchise finally brought Los Angeles a title in 1972, just before West, Baylor, and Wilt Chamberlain called it quits. The Lakers had much more success in the 1980s, winning five NBA championships with Magic Johnson running the Showtime Lakers alongside James Worthy and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
The Lakers boasted another mini-dynasty at the start of the 21st Century. Phil Jackson led the Lakers to three straight titles while managing the egos of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. Jackson also coached the Lakers to two titles at the end of the decade, with Bryant, Derek Fisher, and Pau Gasol.
