Winnipeg Jets 2024 Stanley Cup Odds

One of the biggest surprises in the NHL this season was the Winnipeg Jets. For most of the season, the Jets were in a tight race with the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche for the Central Division lead. Head coach Rick Bowness fired two years ago despite success with the Dallas Stars, has proven to be a perfect fit in Winnipeg. However, there are legitimate concerns about the Jets' viability in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Winnipeg is a mediocre offensive team with a below-average power play. The Jets are too dependent upon goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.

Winnipeg Jets History

Founded in 1999 as the Atlanta Thrashers, the franchise moved to Winnipeg in 2011 due to ownership issues in the Peach State. This is the second iteration of the Winnipeg Jets.

The first Jets franchise was founded in 1972 as a World Hockey Association charter member. The franchise was named “Jets” in honor of signing Chicago Blackhawks superstar Bobby Hull to a record contract before their first campaign. The Jets merged into the NHL in 1979 but moved to Arizona in 1996 due to attendance, arena, and Canadian dollar issues. These days Winnipeg sells out every game and has among the best and most creative fans in the NHL.

The long-term concern for the Jets and their fans is if they can ever really win a Stanley Cup. Winnipeg. In 2017-18 it seemed as if the Jets were on the cusp. But in the Western Conference Final, Winnipeg was upset by the expansion Vegas Golden Knights. That was the only conference final in team history, and the Jets have never come that close since.

Winnipeg remains a difficult sell for free agent players. And free agent coaches for that manner. In the summer of 2022, local product Barry Trotz was available in the head coaching market. But after serious talks with the Jets, Trotz decided not to take the job. The best players in the NHL never consider coming to Winnipeg, known for its harsh winters. And the Jets are often in danger of losing their best players for that reason, as well as oppressive Canadian taxes.
