San Jose Sharks 2025-26 NHL Betting Lines
After years of misery, the worst may be over for the San Jose Sharks. The reason for the optimism is one of the most impressive offseason performances of any National Hockey League club. Since making the Western Conference Final in 2019, the San Jose Sharks have not returned to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. San Jose showed minimal improvement, going from 47 to 52 points this year. The Sharks were once a model franchise, making the playoffs in all but two seasons from 1998 through 2019. But they have fallen off the side of the hockey world, but there is finally some hope for the immediate future.

Off-Season Moves for 2025-26
In: Jeff Skinner, Adam Gaudette, Philipp Kurashev, Dmitry Orlov, John Klingberg, Nick Leddy, Alex Nedeljkovic
Out: Nikolai Kovalenko, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Henry Thrun, Alexandar Georgiev
Addition by subtraction is often the most powerful tool when it comes to meaningful offseason change, especially for the league’s worst teams. The Sharks added three new forwards, three new defensemen, and one new goalie, and even though all but one are below average, they’re all upgrades over what’s being replaced.
Jeff Skinner is one of the bigger names, and he’s usually at his best on bad teams. He has the offensive ability to play in the top six, but doesn’t have the defensive chops to make it work in the bottom six on a good team. Here, he’s home and should fit the Mikael Granlund void fine.
The bigger story here is on the back end. Dmitry Orlov gives the Sharks a legitimate top-four defenseman, while John Klingberg has the potential to be that if he can keep up his playoff turnaround. At the very least, one of the two will give the Sharks a real power-play QB, something they were missing after moving Jake Walman. Nick Leddy isn’t more than a third-pair defenseman, but even that is an improvement over someone such as Marc-Edouard Vlasic or Henry Thrun.
San Jose will still likely be one of the league’s worst teams next year, but they’ve given themselves a chance to be more competitive.
Sharks GM Mike Grier plans to focus on the present in a rebuild that appears to be one of the NHL's most promising. To help the cause, he added veterans who can help shape their young players and build a culture, but could also be moved ahead of the trade deadline in the next two years. The Sharks added Misa, the No. 2 pick of the draft, to a group that already had Yaroslav Askarov, Macklin Celebrini, William Eklund, and Will Smith.
They also signed Gaudette, Klingberg, Kurashev, Nedeljkovic, and Orlov, who will help improve areas that contributed to the worst record in the league. Three of those players are on one-year deals, and Gaudette has a two-year contract worth $2 million annually. If the Sharks are not in playoff contention by the trade deadline, those players can be moved for draft capital. Additionally, it leaves the Sharks with eight defensemen on their roster, which suggests they may be open to trading one of them before the season begins.
Key Players
C Macklin Celebrini had 25 goals, 38 points, 63 points, and a -30. He was San Jose's top scorer. The Sharks selected him first overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, which looks like an astute move.
LW William Eklund had 17 goals, 41 assists, 58 points, and a -6. Eklund was the 7th overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft by the Sharks.
RW Tyler Toffoli had 30 goals, 24 assists, 54 points, and a -20. He is best known from his days with the Los Angeles Kings, where he played an integral role on their 2014 Stanley Cup championship team.
Goaltenders
Goaltender Yaroslav Askarov is expected to take over as the number one goalie. He has 13 games of NHL experience and has mostly labored in the minor leagues since 2022.
Head Coach
Ryan Warsofsky, 36, is San Jose's coach. Before his offseason promotion, Warsofsky was an assistant with the Sharks. He had previous head coaching experience in the AHL with Chicago.

San Jose Sharks History
Founded in 1991 as the first NHL expansion team since the 1979 NHL-WHA merger, the San Jose Sharks were the league’s second attempt at establishing a foothold in the San Francisco Bay Area. From the start, the Sharks have been a success. The term “model franchise” is often used to describe the San Jose NHL entry.
Since 1998, the Sharks have missed the playoffs just four times. Their best run was in 2016, when they made it to the Stanley Cup Final after several teams with far better records failed to reach that goal. Top players in Sharks history include Doug Wilson and Owen Nolan, Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton, and Joe Pavelski.
The Sharks have had good fan support throughout the years, but there is no margin for error. The San Jose market offers endless entertainment options and a limitless calendar of sports dates. Thus, the pressure is always on to win. Patches of empty seats have begun to appear at home games, serving as a warning of what will happen if San Jose doesn’t start winning again soon.
The Sharks have played at the SAP Center since 1993. Commonly referred to as “The Shark Tank,” the SAP Center boasts one of the loudest crowds in hockey. A continuing rebuild will test fan loyalty this year.
