Ottawa Senators 2024 Stanley Cup Odds
The Ottawa Senators finished the 2022-23 season out of the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. But the Sens are showing methodical improvement that has sparked optimism for the future. However, Losing Alex DeBrincat after just one season is a huge loss for Ottawa — there’s no way around that. Getting Dominik Kubalik in return is fine, but it doesn’t do anything to change that. The Senators are a much less formidable team going into next season. Still, a playoff window is likely to be open in the East.

Ottawa Senators NHL Betting Lines
The 2022-23 Ottawa Senators were 39-35-8 straight up and 39-42 over/under the total. Also, Ottawa was 6th in the Atlantic Division playoff standings. Ottawa was 49 points behind the Boston Bruins in the Atlantic Division race. Ottawa had NHL rankings of 18th for goals scored and 8th for power play efficiency. In comparison on defense, the Senators had NHL rankings of 20th for goals against and 14th for penalty killing.
First among Ottawa scorers was Tim Stutzle with 39 goals, 51 assists, 90 points, and a -3. Goaltender Cam Talbot had a .898 save percentage and 2.93 goals against average. His record was 17-14-2 with one shutout.
Head coach D.J. Smith is sitting on arguably the NHL's hottest seat. He has been with the Senators for four seasons and produced a 120-139-32 record with zero playoff appearances. Still, GM Pierre Dorion put his support behind Smith for the coming campaign, an endorsement Smith likely earned -- because if it weren't for remarkably bad injury luck last season, the Senators might have earned a playoff spot. How long is the leash for Smith now, though? Ottawa should have most of its important players available come fall, and it will be on Smith to show he is still the right candidate to lead the Senators back to contending status.
But all hope is not lost for Ottawa just because the DeBrincat trade didn’t work out. This team is still on the rise that can challenge for a playoff spot partly because of a sizeable upgrade between the pipes. The Cam Talbot experience didn’t work out, but that shouldn’t be true for Joonas Korpisalo. At the very least, he should be an above-average goalie for the Senators with a chance to be more if what we saw from him last season was real. The deal's term is dicey, but it has a chance to pay off handsomely.

Ottawa Senators History
The Ottawa Senators were a 1992 expansion team that joined the league that year with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ottawa has long had a reputation for being a low revenue and budget team that can’t afford superstars on the payroll. Ottawa made the 2007 Stanley Cup Final, losing to the Anaheim Ducks. It was their only appearance ever in the Final.
Ottawa has struggled to gain a foothold as a franchise with the masses. In Canada, the Toronto Maple Leafs are king, with the Montreal Canadiens also revered as the most successful franchise of all time. The Senators have also struggled on the ice with more lean years than not. And that has caused them revenue problems and low attendance.
At the beginning of their existence, the Senators used the old Ottawa Civic Center as a temporary home. The rink sat well under 10,000 fans, but the hockey-starved city didn’t care. Ottawa played there from 1992 through December 31, 1995.
Originally, the idea of building the new arena in a remote area far from downtown was seen as a developmental opportunity. Now it is seen as a disaster that almost cost Ottawa the franchise. Recently the team announced that they would move to a new downtown facility that is planned but not yet started. The team is expected to sign a new lease for the proposed facility soon, with groundbreaking to commence this year.
