2023/24 NHL Stanley Cup Betting Odds
At the NHL All-Star break, the Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche, and Boston Bruins were the top choices to win the 2024 Stanley Cup. But as we know, playoff hockey is an entirely different sport from regular season hockey. And therein lies the rub. More than any other sport, success in pro hockey’s regular season has nothing to do with winning in the playoffs. Remember, the Boston Bruins finished the 2022-23 season with the best record in history. However, Boston was eliminated in the first round by the 8-seed Florida Panthers, who went on to win the Eastern Conference Final.
NHL Betting Lines
Gamblers are expecting the Edmonton Oilers and Boston Bruins to meet in the Stanley Cup Final. Otherwise, if Edmonton fails to advance the Colorado Avalanche are a strong second choice by gamblers as the alternative out of the Western Conference. The NHL returns from the All-Star Break with games on Monday, February 5, 2024.

Boston Bruins
Like last season, the Boston Bruins remain the class of the Eastern Conference. Boston finished the first half of the regular season with seven wins in their last eight games. Boston continues to show great balance as one of the most complete teams in the NHL. Boston has a tremendous opportunity to pad its lead in the Eastern Conference with seven consecutive home games, post-All-Star break. A key matchup is on February 8 against the Vancouver Canucks, the top team in the Western Conference, for what could be a Stanley Cup Final preview.
Edmonton Oilers
Following a 3-9-1 start that nearly destroyed their season before it began, the Edmonton Oilers fired Jay Woodcroft. They replaced him with Kris Knoblauch, who has engineered a season renaissance with a record of 26-6 since taking command. Edmonton steamrolled its way to the All-Star break with 16 consecutive wins. Like Boston, the Oilers are one of the top 200-foot complete teams in the NHL. However, the Oilers will face a stark challenge in return from the break with road games at the Vegas Golden Knights, Anaheim Ducks, and Los Angeles Kings. Following a home game against the Detroit Red Wings, the Oilers will hit the road for three more tilts.
Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche also powered its way to the All-Star break with 11 wins in the final 14 games. Colorado has the second-best record in the Western Conference, four points behind the Vancouver Canucks. The huge worry for gamblers and Avs fans is Colorado’s ranking of 17th in the NHL for goals against. The Avs have not been the same since losing goaltender Darcy Kuemper after their 2022 Stanley Cup championship. Also problematic is that Colorado begins the second half of the season with six consecutive road games against Eastern Conference teams.
Florida Panthers
Florida won its final four games before the All-Star break and has the second most points in the Eastern Conference. Now that the Panthers are healthy, they have the proven accomplishment of being a Stanley Cup Finalist. Florida begins the second half of the season with a three-game homestand against the Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, and Colorado Avalanche. Florida is one of the best defensive teams in the NHL but needs an improvement in secondary goal scoring.
Vancouver Canucks
The biggest surprise and most improved team in the NHL is the Vancouver Canucks, the top team in the Western Conference. The Canucks powered to the All-Star break with nine wins in their final 11 games. Two stats that show the potential for a slide are that the Canucks rank 27th for shots on goal and 16th for shots allowed. So far, goaltender Thatcher Demko has been a stalwart. But it is reasonable to ask if he can maintain a save percentage of .920 for the rest of the campaign as he faces so much vulcanized rubber.
New York Rangers
Of the top public favorites for the 2024 Stanley Cup championship, the New York Rangers fared the worst before the All-Star break, with eight losses in their last 12 games. Goal scoring remains a concern for the Broadway Blueshirts, who rank a mediocre 14th. Also, New York ranks 9th for goals against, which is good but nowhere near great. Following the All-Star break, the Rangers host the Colorado Avalanche and Tampa Bay Lightning to begin a stretch of four home games in the first five matchups.
