Arlington Renegades 2023 XFL Season Recap

Arlington Renegades XFL Online Betting

Before the playoffs began, not many gave the Arlington Renegades much of a shot to hoist the hardware come the conclusion of the XFL Championship Game. Not with Bob Stoops’s squad entering the second season with 4-6 SU and ATS records and needing the San Antonio Brahmas to spit the bit in order to lock down the second seed in the XFL South. Their odds to win it all at the online sportsbook chimed in at +900! Be that as it may, there wasn’t a more impressive team in XFL playoff betting than that of the sub .500 Renegades. After getting swept by the rival Houston Roughnecks in the regular season while failing to cover the XFL odds in both meetings, Arlington dominated the division championship en route to logging the impressive 26-11 outright win and cover. They then followed it up with a handling of the XFL North champion D.C. Defenders avenging an earlier season OT loss by cruising to the 35-26 outright win as 8.5-point underdogs. Because of it, the 2023 Arlington Renegades go down as only the second team to win a league title since the LA Extreme pulled off the feat in the inaugural XFL season back in 2001.

Arlington Renegades 2023 Season Recap

In pulling out the surprising playoff run, the Arlington Renegades ended up 6-6 SU and ATS with the under cashing in eight of their 12 played games. The offense was nothing short of a disaster better than halfway through the season which forced the other side of the ball to put the team in a position to win games. And boy was that defense lights out with it ranked amongst the top-four at stopping both the pass and the run while serving up fewer than 20 points per game. On top of that, the defense also forced a league-high 26 turnovers and immediately turned three of them into points by making house calls. It wasn’t until later in the season that the offense finally became a threat and that had everything to do with the trade acquisition of Luis Perez. While the oft-traveled Spring League quarterback took some time to settle in, the unit proved to be one of the league’s elite once he finally did.

Without No. 12 lining up under center from Week 8 forward, the Renegades never would’ve had a shot of competing for the title. If they did, they likely would’ve dropped another gutwrencher to the Roughnecks in the South Division Championship. After ripping the Defenders for 288 passing yards and a perfect 3:0 TD/INT ratio, Perez would go on to be named the XFL Championship MVP. When the dust cleared on the 2023 XFL betting season, Perez would throw for 2,207 yards and a 15:7 TD/INT ratio. Only two of those seven interceptions were thrown as a member of the Renegades, and he didn’t throw a single errant pass in either playoff game. It remains to be seen whether the NFL will come a calling after leading Arlington to a memorable championship run. Likely not if we’re being honest. He could be best served being an ambassador to the XFL and come back next season in hopes of winning it all in successive campaigns.

It’s not likely that many Renegades on the offensive side of the ball get looks from the NFL as poor the unit was over a bulk of the regular season. One notable however could be TE Sal Cannella who ended up reeling in 48 of 70 targets and turned them into 504 yards and one touchdown. His huge performance in the XFL Championship might just garner him some looks! The defense however is very likely to have a number of players get invites to NFL training camps and it all starts with LB Willie Taylor III who just became the first Renegade to ink a deal with an NFL team after the Jacksonville Jaguars recently scooped him up. The 24-year old ended the regular season with 16 tackles, eight tackles for loss, a team-high four sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception. He showed an ability to both rush the passer and drop back into coverage and defend the pass. A practice squad spot should be made available at the very least.

Regardless of whomever ultimately goes on to play at the next level, the Renegades will be a contender in the XFL once the season comes back around in 2024. Upper management proved it could field a winner in the COVID shortened 2020 season and followed it up with a title three years later. This franchise gets football. Coming from the Lone Star State that hardly comes as a surprise!
