On the whole, the 2023 season was a good one for the New Orleans Breakers. New Orleans made the USFL South Division championship game after a strong regular season in which they compiled the second-best record in the league. The Birmingham Stallions and the New Orleans Breakers were the winningest teams this season and the two highest-scoring teams. And that made the South Division title game a battle of the heavyweights. However, the Stallions proved superior, as their impressive offense, led by Alex McGough, managed to keep the Breakers at bay. Last week, the Birmingham Stallions confirmed its position as the league’s best by trouncing the New Orleans Breakers in a 47-22 victory.

New Orleans Breakers 2023 Season Overview and Week 10 Recap

Last week the Birmingham Stallions beat the New Orleans Breakers by a score of 47-22 as 3-point favorites in the USFL South Division championship game playoff. New Orleans had a record of 7-3 in the regular season, good for 2nd place in the USFL South Division. New Orleans has USFL metrics of 2nd for offensive yardage, 5th for rushing yardage, 1st for passing yardage, and 2nd for scoring offense. On defense New Orleans ranks 2nd for total yards allowed, 3rd for rushing yards allowed, 3rd for passing yards allowed, and 2nd for points permitted.

New Orleans coach John DeFilippo knew McGough could play this kind because he'd seen how McGough practiced and prepared. McGough was a QB for the Jacksonville Jaguars when DeFilippo was QB coach in Jacksonville.

McGough made several plays Sunday where it was clear he was reaching that upper level where your mind, body, and soul must be one.

Perhaps it was when McGough put Anree Saint-Amour, a Breakers defensive end who had six sacks in the 10-week regular season, on skates, escaped to the sideline, and then flexed toward a crowd of Stallions fans rooting him on.

Perhaps it was when McGough found wideout Davion Davis wide open on a back-breaking, 13-play, 88-yard drive that lasted fewer than four minutes to put the Stallions up 25-7 in the first half.

But it was when the Stallion offense came out to start the second half, scored, and watched the defense respond with a second pick of McLeod Bethel-Thompson, a quarterback who’d led the Toronto Argonauts to the Canadian Football League Grey Cup. Then McGough rushed in for a TD, his fourth score of the day, capping a seventh-straight scoring drive for the Stallions.

The Breakers managed a pair of TDs in the fourth quarter. Still, the game was out of reach for New Orleans by then. It wasn’t just that the Stallions' offense didn’t stop scoring, it’s that former SEC defensive coordinator John Chavis and his defense remembered giving up 45 in a loss to New Orleans earlier this season and chose to hold a grudge. With the return of former All-American linebacker Scooby Wright to the lineup for the first time since Week 4, the Stallions created nearly as many turnovers (two) as they allowed TDs (three).

By the fourth quarter Sunday, the Stallions led the Breakers 40–7, in a showcase of why Birmingham has the most productive offense in the USFL, with the best player in the USFL behind center. Their offensive outburst was not unforeseeable.

With their victory over the Breakers, the Stallions continue their quest for a second consecutive championship, heading to Canton, Ohio, to meet the Pittsburgh Maulers. The Stallions will be the team to watch in the coming championship game. If their current form is anything to go by, the Maulers will have to dig deep to beat the Stallions, who are on course to cement their status as the dominant force in the USFL.
