NFL Hall of Fame Game Betting

The time period from the end of the NFL draft through the summer is the big offseason lull, and by the end of it, fans are pining for some action. The Hall of Fame Game then comes to the rescue, as it is the official kickoff for the return of football at the NFL level. The Hall of Fame Game is the first preseason action of the year, and while it is not full of big names for much of the contest, it is nonetheless a signal of more meaningful games to come.

The Hall of Fame Game in 2019 will feature the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons. Denver has a new quarterback in Joe Flacco and it will be interesting to see if the team puts him out there for the first time, or if it waits until later in the preseason.

Canton, Ohio is a sacred place for football fans throughout the world, as it is the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The game coincides with the induction of several members into the NFL’s highest individual placement. Fawcett Stadium isn't the grandest site of all for football games, but it's where the Hall of Fame Game is played every year between two teams who kick off their preseasons a week before the rest of the NFL.

Catch all of the action of the 2019 Hall of Fame Game from Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio on Thursday, August 1st, 2019 at 8 p.m. ET live on NBC, as the Denver Broncos take on the Atlanta Falcons.

Hall of Fame Game Format

The Hall of Fame Game is really more of a spectacle than it is an actual NFL game. This is a meaningful moment for many youngsters who have never played in NFL games before, and it's an opportunity to build some game film to impress both their current teams and any prospective future employers should they not make their initial 53-man rosters. Veterans will usually suit up to make token appearances, though for the most part, it's one drive and out for the vets if they even bother playing. For a veteran team like the Falcons, it seems unlikely that quarterback Matt Ryan or star wide receiver Julio Jones see the field in this one.

The Hall of Fame Game is really more about its festivities than anything else. It's obviously the only game of the year played in the small town of Canton, and it’s a fan-friendly event for sure, one that typically includes meet and greets with old Hall of Famers and the current inductees. Any given year, you'll see fans of all 32 teams wearing their jerseys at the Hall of Fame Game, even if their team isn't involved.

As a result, the football is typically lacking, as teams have only a few weeks to prepare and aren’t going to game plan much. Points have surely been at a premium in recent years in the Hall of Fame Game. In five of the last six editions of the Hall of Fame Game, the two teams playing have failed to exceed a total of 30 points. Just three of the last 11 participants have scored 20 over the course of the 60 minutes.

Just 10 teams (9.6%) have scored at least 30 points in the history of the Hall of Fame Game, while 25 (24.0%) have been held in single-digits. The average Hall of Fame Game has featured a total of just 32.6 points per game over the 52 contests. Eight of the last 12 Hall of Fame Games have been decided by a single score. The average margin of victory has been 10.6 points per game, including a pair of ties, once in the initial Hall of Fame Game of 1962, then again in 1980 in a wild scoreless tie between the Packers and Chargers in a driving rainstorm. The lack of scoring is certainly something to remember for this year’s Hall of Fame Game.

While the Falcons will have a powerful offense once again in the regular season, the big guns will be shelved in this one. Whether there are a lot of points or not, and whether this is a competitive game or not, at least football will officially be back with the Hall of Fame Game kicking off the 2019 season.
